I watched this last night on CBS. I've bolded the movies that I've seen. I think Shawshank should have been #1, but it's my favorite movie. I haven't seen "It's a Wonderful Life", but it looks sappy and I refuse to watch it.

Fiddler rocks. I forgot to highlight it, as well.

I'm just happy that 'To Kill a Mockingbird' was #2. Best book ever, and a great movie, as well.

"A wonderful life" is pretty lame. But then again, I hate 2001, and everybody says it's fantastic.

          6 E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL 1982
          12 APOLLO 13 1995
14 THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI 1957

I agree. Other than the monkeys and HAL, I hated 2001. Blackberry says the book is better, though.

And Babe was the one that got the biggest reaction from Blackberry and me when we saw it on TV. Love that pig. Love him. Plus, James Cromwell is the man.

Funny, same reason I'm not jazzed to see Shawshank.

Also, I'm personally upset, for some reason, that you guys didn't like 2001.

Re: AFI Top 100 Inspirational Movies

Most of those movies are crap, IMO.

No Blade Runner? The film that started the cyberpunk genre in film?

No Mad Max? Which practically spawned the post-apocalyptic genre in America and elsewhere(especially Europe. The Italians ripped this one off repeatedly and with pride!)?

No Akira? Which practically made anime known within America?

How about Night of the Living Dead, which turned the horror genre entirely upside down, one of the first horror films to liberally use violence and gore to frighten audiences?

I guess if it doesn't make crowds of people walk out of the theatre feeling blissfully ignorant and happy, and if it didn't have millions of dollars and a huger ad campaign dumped into it, it's not worthy of praise.

No Dr. No(James Bond), which kicked the action genre's ass straight to the moon?

                  No Dirty Harry?

Don't get me wrong, some of those listed are great films, but most of them were rehashed crap. There's a lot of overlap in plot outlines and character archetypes in the films listed, so much so that you could probably apply half of the character archetypes and plot outlines in each film to any other film on the list.

I guess I shouldn't judge "It's a Wonderful Life", but the only scene I ever see is the Full House ending, and that scares me.

You're mistaking "inspirational" as the impact they had on filmmaking with what the AFI was aiming for, which is films that inspire you emotionally. Like Chicken Soup for the Soul or some ****.

That's what I was going to say, more or less. Terr's listed films were great inspirations for genres, though.
