    I can't believe I never played....

Having just paid off my late fees, all owing me to once again rent games from work, I've been picking up some of the PS2's more prominent titles that I've just never played, for one reason or another. Today, as part one of an ongoing series, we have:

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (2001)

This game is insane. In a very, very good way. The controls are simple and tight, the story is deep and engrossing (although it kinda peters out toward the end there). All in a freshman title for the PS2. This is what the PS2 should have been like, and now, in it's autumn days, all we have to be proud of is 6 different "Cabela Huntin' and Fishin"" games. Basically what I'm try to say is this: if you own a PS2, get this game. If your friend has a PS2, steal it, and get this game. If the Wal-Mart down the road has a PS2, hold them up and take the system and the game. It is an amazing title that EVERYONE should play.

Next week on "I can't believe I never played..."

    God of War (2004)

...and after that I have no idea what I'll play. Let's hear your suggestions!

MGS2 has lots of problems. The environments are all small, cramped and similar-looking. The enemy AI is way too ruthless. If you get caught, you might as well just kill yourself. And it's retarded how you have to collect dogtags in MULTIPLE difficulties to get the extra items.

Yeah, I never bothered with the extra stuff but the main game is one of the most memorable experiences I've HAD with a game. That story is maddeningly good...

      MADDEN.

Skip God of War and play two other great 2001 PS2 games: Ico and Final Fantasy X.

I haven't seen much of the game. I tried it once, quit after I got caught in the conference room. Which, if I recall, was something that was easily avoided, which probably means I did it on perpose. Yes, definately one of the more amusing Game Overs.

God of War got boring really really fast.

I do enjoy Jak and Daxter, though. I'm currently playing Jak III.

(although it kinda peters out toward the end there).
The story only gets better at the end. Think about it; a world where all information is controled and regulated and no one is different. There is no individuality, no freedom, no liberty (despite the ironic title). The whole "SCISSORS61!" and "mass forum" speach at the end of the game was one of the greatest and most well written pieces of dialog I've seen in modern/science fiction writing since the works of Phillip K. Dick's VALIS. The whole ending to MGS2 was a bit above some people's heads but if you stop to think about it you begin to understand why it was so great.

But I don't think that the Patriots were trying to create an Orwellian type of universe, only control enough information to keep people "safe". Oh well, it does set up a nice (possible) premise for MGS4... will Snake's final geriatric tale be his takedown of the greatest enemy Freedom has ever known: The Patriots. Think about it... it's AWESOME.

Anyways, I've been meaning to try ICO... also to try Shadow of the Collosus. Right now I'm messing with God of War and MGS 3. I'll let ya'll know what I think!

God, isn't that the truth? They are way too ****ing ruthless. Sometimes I even wonder how they found me in the first place... not much time to think that because you have to RUN!!! Over all I do love the game. It has a very creative story at least. Now that I played it again, the trailers for MGS4 makes more sense.

I don't remember MGS2 being very hard. Probably should play it again.

I remember with MGS2 every subsequent task becoming more and more daunting.
