    More bad news from Sony? This is getting old.

    BOTH PS3s available at launch will be "basic in nature". Sony wants to upgrade the console throughout it's life, at least once a year. they plan on future versions having reconfigured processors, more ram, stuff like that.

    Meaning just like the PC gaming scene, you're going to have to upgrade if you want to play the newest games. Will you be able to purchase the upgrades seperately and add them to your system yourself? or are you going to have to buy a whole new PS3 every year?

    no one is going to be happy about this if they do it. we buy consoles to get away from the endless upgrading of the PC market.

      eh.....i've never liked gamepro. They've had some wrong info before, even for the simplest things. i'm not believing this yet.

        If this is true, then no way I am getting a PS3. I hate dealing with PC gaming, with all its stupid upgrades, drivers, and hardware issues. No way do I want to spend any more money on upgrades for an already expensive system.

        I hope it isn't true...but then again, I really wouldn't care since I won't be getting a PS3 anytime soon.

          I hate gamepro too, but considering it's an interview (and one conducted by a respected japanese gaming site), the info is legit. Sony doesnt say they're doing it for sure, only that they want to.

              That is a horrendus idea.

              Maybe Sony's PR geniuses are coming out will all these terrible ideas so that when PS3 finally comes out and they didn't implement them they can be like, "See? It's a lot better than we said it was gonna be! LOL!"

                Sony seems to have lost sight of the fact that the console gaming scene is fundamentally different from the PC one. If they want to make a gaming PC then make one but a hybrid isn't going to fully appeal to either side. Especially since nobody's going to replace their PC with a PS3 since there's still a ton of productivity applications they'll still need a PC for, not to mention the difference in keyboard/mouse controls to controller when it comes to games, so the console needs to JUST BE A CONSOLE. I think they're pushing the "it's a computer" angle to justify the un-console-like price tage but they end up coming across as a jack of all trades, master of none.

                  Even if you're able to buy the upgrades yourself, rather than buy a new console every year or so, it'll still fail. Didn't they learn from Sega? and their own Hard Drive?

                    Looks to me like this is how they intend to keep the PS3 going for ten years.

                    Kutaragi, being an accomplished electrical engineer and businessman first and foremost, constantly downplays consoles focused on playing games as children's toys, yet refuses to admit that the games are the primary, and perhaps the only reason PSX and PS2 were so successful. Inasmuch, it seems like he's going all-out to push the PS3 as a home supercomputer, cramming everything anyone could ever use into a single box, including the home computer.

                    This would be a big step in the wrong direction. They're under the impression that the multimedia capabilities of their consoles are what make them successful, to the degree that they even rely on the brand name alone to sell the consoles like mad, if their outrageous comments as of late are any indication. They're considering their customers sheep or cattle, and I don't appreciate that.

                    Unless they get their act together and actually justify the PS3 as a games console, this is going to hurt them very, very badly. And that's not good for the industry.

                              I don't think they'll require updates to play the latest games. That's just too stupid. They can make games scalable like PC games.

                              I really doubt that Sony would support any upgrades to the existing hardware. They'll make super PS3s and sell them themselves. Any upgrading you do on your console will be considered a mod and then you won't be able to take the system online or get it fixed by Sony and stuff like that.
