    Game Addiction

One more hit of Barbie Horse Adventures and I'm out.

By FIA CURLEY, Associated Press Writer

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands - An addiction center is opening Europe's first detox clinic for game addicts, offering in-house treatment for people who can't leave their joysticks alone. (Cue Rimshot).

Video games may look innocent, but they can be as addictive as gambling or drugs — and just as hard to kick, says Keith Bakker, director of Amsterdam-based Smith & Jones Addiction Consultants.

Bakker already has treated 20 video game addicts, aged 13 to 30, since January. Some show withdrawal symptoms, such as shaking and sweating, when they look at a computer.

His detox program begins in July. It will run four to eight weeks, including discussions with therapists and efforts to build patients' interests in alternative activities.

"We have kids who don't know how to communicate with people face-to-face because they've spent the last three years talking to somebody in Korea through a computer," Bakker said. "Their social network has completely disappeared."

It can start with a Game Boy, perhaps given by parents hoping to keep their children occupied but away from the television. From there it can progress to multilevel games that aren't made to be won.

Bakker said he has seen signs of addiction in children as young as 8.

Hyke van der Heijden, 28, a graduate of the Amsterdam program, started playing video games 20 years ago. By the time he was in college he was gaming about 14 hours a day and using drugs to play longer.

"For me, one joint would never be enough, or five minutes of gaming would never be enough," he said. "I would just keep going until I crashed out."

Van der Heijden first went to Smith & Jones for drug addiction in October 2005, but realized the gaming was the real problem. Since undergoing treatment, he has distanced himself from his smoking and gaming friends. He says he has been drug- and game-free for eight months.

Like other addicts, Bakker said, gamers are often trying to escape personal problems. When they play, their brains produce endorphins, giving them a high similar to that experienced by gamblers or drug addicts. Gamers' responses to questions even mirror those of alcoholics and gamblers when asked about use.

"Many of these kids believe that when they sit down, they're going to play two games and then do their homework," he said.

However, unlike other addicts, most gamers received their first game from their parents. "Because it's so new, parents don't see that this is something that can be dangerous," Bakker said.

Tim, a gamer who is currently under treatment, agreed to discuss his addiction on condition of his last name not being used. He said he began playing video games three years ago at age 18. Soon he wouldn't leave his room for dinner. Later, he began taking drugs to stay awake and play longer. Finally he sought help and picked up other hobbies to occupy his time.

Symptoms of addiction are easy to spot, Bakker says. Parents should take notice if a child neglects usual activities, spends several hours at a time with the computer and has no social life.

Bakker said parents of game addicts frequently echo the words of partners of cocaine addicts: "'I knew something was wrong, but I didn't know what it was.'"

I didn't know if this would go in free or video game, feel free to move it.

Yes of course games get you high. Some people are just stupid I think, and them everyone else is like omg this [fill in the blank] is bad for you and addicting. All the while failing to realize it's addictive personality that is the problem not the thing causing the addiction (excluding known substances that cause physical dependence, you know like nicotine). I think someone who decides to stay up all day playing video games on a regular basis has a little more wrong with them than simple addiction, and I bet you there is a lot more at work than just video games, like depression, social anxiety, things like that, or maybe, just maybe now, the DRUGS he was taking (which are convientely not named). Or you know parents could just take away the games, or maybe even talk to their kids and interact with them, I know that may be pushing it as they may have to actually do something.

Van der Heijden first went to Smith & Jones for drug addiction in October 2005, but realized the gaming was the real problem.
Wow, there is so much wrong with this sentence, it's almost not funny. I mean obviously the physically addicting drugs, that have proven addiction qualities aren't the problem, it's gotta be the games. I know if we can't convince parents that games are the devil, lets tell them that they are addicting. You know what that just might work, Johnson get on that and write an article.

"Many of these kids believe that when they sit down, they're going to play two games and then do their homework," he said.
Guess he never heard of procrastination. That word must have too many syllables for him to understand it. People find all kinds of reasons not to do real work, doesn't mean they're addicted to those things.

Man people are really dumb, in general.

my fiancee and I rarely do anything but play video games for like 6 hours a day, even when alone.
I see nothing wrong with this.

But she is agoraphobic, and I wouldnt doubt I have mild social anxiety too, so, yeah.

        But still. Who cares?

That describes me to a tee but I'm not addicted to gaming or being online, I just don't have anything else to do. The only people I socialize with are my one friend and my cousins and whenever I go over to their houses all there is to do is watch tv or play games anyway.

Well about the addiction the one game I have known people to be actually addicted to is WoW, because I know people who will literally spend all semester in their room playing that game, but that is a special case. It weird to see the kind of power that game has on people. Of course most of those people already had highly antisocial tendencies anyway, so the game just gave them a way to take those tendencies to new heights. But of course as with any purely psychological addiction, in the end it is the person who is responsible for letting their habits get out of hand and take over their life, I just get tired of people always blaming everything but the person because their the "victim". Only things that have proven physiological addictive properties should ever be blamed for an addiction, and most of the time the person knew this before they started taking them, and chose to take them anyway.

Don't forget EverQuest aka EverCrack. That was THE digital dope fix until WoW came along and perfected the formula. But you're right. All addictions are the same whether it's drugs, sex, games, whatever. It's a person using external pleasures to distract themselves from real problems without dealing with them.

There you go throwing nuance and sophistication into the discussion. We need someone to blame here.

Well, that explains my lack of a social life. ...No wait, video games are the cause of me not doing my homework. It's because I kept saying stupid things that got me bullied, and I figured the best way to avoid it was to become a recluse. No sense going outside and getting made fun of, when I can safely sit in the comfort of my home and play my N64 all day.

I certainly hope these clinics aren't getting people completely off of video games. There's nothing wrong with some gaming.

I haven't really played a video game in over ten weeks. I started up AC to complete something, but that's about it. I wish I was mildly addicted to games right now.
