Yes, this topic is legal. This game is being made for RPG Maker 2003, but I have a legal copy of it, and I myself have nothing to do with the RM2k3 community. I'm an old regular from the old boards. I started using 2k3 legit prior to an american release of XP... which I regret.
Anyway, on to this topic...
I'd imagine some of you remember Anormia. In its first incarnation, it was intended as an RPGM1 game. Based on storyline leaks, it was called "the xenogears of rpgm", and won a "most anticipated game award" over at the game faqs forums. Not that this really means a lot anymore.
However, I was too lazy/immature/ADHD/pick one to script a game this dialogue intensive for RPGM1. Thus, the Anormia Project failed.
It is now being restarted, and has been in development for the last 5 months or so. There is a small production team working on this. I know that by saying that, I probably remind some of Final Ocean: Blue, but... i'm being serious. We have myself doing most of the work, three playtesters, two concept artists, and several tile and enemy artists. We also have a script proofreader, and there's a good chance I may end up doing the soundtrack for this (musician, myself.)
We fully intend to finish Anormia this time. This team has some pretty lofty aspirations - this RM2k3 version is meant as a demo itself. A few years from now, once we have the playable version out for 2k3, we intend to make a full 3d version of it for the next gen consoles, and attempt to get it published. The fact that several CS majors and programmers are part of the current team will undoubtably help us in this regard.
So, about the game? A lot of you may remember, but a lot of it has changed. So please bear with.
A comprehensive storyline summary wouldn't do this justice, so I think I will touch on basic ideas and themes:
Anormia takes place in a near-future alternate-earth style environment.
The backdrop of the story is a massive civil war happening between the United Federation (the world government) and a few of its member states, such as Floria, a slightly more traditional provence to the southeast.
Despite the presence of this civil war, most of the game does not deal with the war directly, rather, it focuses on a more subversive and behind the scenes plotline.
There is no one "main villain" in this game. Yes, there is a final boss, but to place him as the main villain would be.. a weak arguement. There are about 4 strains of villainy present, all working alone. This is a game focused on character development and interaction, and although it does involve some traditional rpg cliches, it seeks to avoid the majority of them.
Anormia is a story of time, history, and redemption. It borrows heavily from Hindu myth and a particular strand of pagan/christian fusion that existed several hundred years ago in what is now known as germany. It fuses these symbols, and allows them to breathe beneath the surface of an otherwise normal and futuristic rpg story. The story of anormia has many, many layers, and tons of symbolism. And no - this isn't rehashed Xenogears or Evangelion religious symbolism. This is well researched, new, and innovative symbolism. Most of the symbolism deals with the hindu notion of time as a series of cycles, and the iron age, or Kali Yuga.
I know I haven't said a lot about the actual plot.. but its really hard to describe because there are so many twists. I'll try to get a summary written at some point, and post it here, together with some small character bios.
I do hope I have interested some of you in this.
