How, exactly, is banning same-sex marriage an indication of wisdom?

discrimination against a minority is what rich white people do best.

It's not, but the Senate shot down banning same-sex marriage for the time being, which is good.

Exploitation of deeply held beliefs has got to come in a close second.

When I said "wisdom," I was referring to a quote in the news article. I agree, it's good that it got shot down, but I'm appalled that anybody would be so offended in the first place to consider amending the constitution. It's pretty bad when our own House and Senate members have so little irreverance for the Constitution that they would use it to ban freedoms rather than uphold them.

It wouldn't be the first time that the Constitution was amended to bar a freedom.

"We're not going to stop until marriage between a man and a woman is protected," said Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan.
THEY'RE GONNA BAN DIVORCE?!?!?!

P.S.: Guess who I'm not voting for.

Re: I <3 Congress

I can only think of one instance that a Constitutional amendment was used to bar one freedom that didn't simultaneously free other people, usually minorities, or ensure some sort of variation on life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. And that amendment was repealed. The principles behind a Constitutional amendment banning gay marriage are alien to the principles written into the Constitution. Or maybe I'm missing something.

Maybe I'm just fatalistic, but watching the way we treat our federal system anymore is like watching a train wreck waiting to happen.

Edit: *Also takes notes on who to vote for in the next Kansas House/Senate race.*

That's one of the main reasons I made The Gay. How does gay marriage effect marriage between man and a woman at all???

"Eventually, Congress is going to have to catch up to the wisdom of the American people or the American people will change Congress for the better."
Like it or not, every nationwide poll is 50/50 on if they think there should be gay marriage. I think Congress represented the American people pretty well.

It doesn't. The only reason for the gay marriage ban talk is because of the Bible. And we're supposed to have seperation of church and state? I guess not.

I have to disagree here. Christians don't vote as a block. The reason we're hearing about this is because the Republican party has had failures and embarrassments for going on three straight years and this administration even managed to weaken support from their most vehement hard-liners.

This is very much a ploy to foster the illusion of doing something, even though they knew it was unlikely to pass. Just like the immigration issue, they can point to the "others" and say they're eroding American values. Vote for us, We're the Values Party. Democrats will just hand America over to Terrorists and Gays. Booga Booga!
