Some of the original prints they have are decent, some are not. Some of the better prints no longer exist. I have heard that they have used less worthy prints for certain DVDs when other better ones were available, but I only have two DVDs so it's tough for me to tell. Most of them are only slightly better quality than the VHS copies (also from columbia). I've heard fans complain that the copies they have on VHS are better than the DVD versions. So I'm guessing they don't do much to help remaster them.
EDIT - after checking this one message board, I've come across a topic that mentions one of the major problems. It turns out they often use 16mm prints when they have 35mm prints available.
The stooges are weird... some people like them, others don't. If you're already a fan, I would say do your research and pick the ones with better print quality. I've heard that the newer DVDs aren't as bad, but I haven't verified this.
If you don't really know which shorts you like, I'd take suggestions from other fans here. There is also a really great site that reviews all the shorts and rates them. The guy who rated them usually likes the same shorts I do.
I would recommend "A plumbing we will go," "false alarms," "hoi polloi," "men in black," "ants in the pantry," "the sitter downers," and although it's extremely violent, stupid and racist: "They Stooge to Conga." There are others but I can't think of them off the top of my head.
Here is a link to the review page I was speaking of: Yeah!
You might check for used DVDs on amazon. I get mine online.
