Is EVERYONE at Sony this full of themself?

Besides defending the PS3, [president of Sony Computer Entertainment's Worldwide Studios, Phil] Harrison took time to evangelize the device, which will launch worldwide this November. In particular, he said the Linux-based operating system on the console's hard drive will have enough processing power and nongaming functionalities to render traditional PCs--most of which use a form of Microsoft's Windows OS--moot in the home. "We believe that the PS3 will be the place where our users play games, watch films, browse the Web, and use other [home] computer functions," said Harrison. "The PlayStation 3 is a computer. We do not need the PC."

PS3 is so great! I'll just throw out my PC right now!

I understand what they're trying to do, but sometimes convergence can go way too far. This is one of those cases.

I already see where this is going.

In the future, all things will be done by one thing.

Is the PS3 a prototype for The Controller?

        You decide!

Only Paul will get this joke.

No thanks, Sony. I want a PC THAT DOESN'T BREAK WHEN I LOOK AT IT.

Sony's arrogance is really remeniscent of Nintendo's before they lost market share. I'm not quite sure they'll die, but the writing is on the wall for them to at least be behind Microsoft. Nintendo is posed to win it, but let's face it, this is like an election...a LOT can happen over the next couple years.

I knew that Sony was quite a hungry company, but both feet? This is going to hurt them more, IMO. Act like its the second coming or something, Sony, that will surely make everything better.

I agree, Kire. Kutaragi is pretty much this generation's Yamauchi Lite. However, there is a significant difference in that Kutaragi is a very bright engineer, and more concerned about providing a very high-performance product, hence all the custom tech, inasmuch the price. He's just pushing it a bit with his head in the clouds.

I say Yamauchi Lite because no one is more outrageous than Yamauchi.

Nintendo's in a very, very good position at the moment, and so it Microsoft. But a lot can change during the course of a console generation. Regardless, I'm rooting for Nintendo all the way.

In a recent interview with Computer and Video Games, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe CEO David Reeves told the Web site he was worried less about moving units at the PS3's launch than he was about maintaining sales after early adopters had purchased their systems. "We have built up a certain brand equity over time since the launch of PlayStation in 1995 and PS2 in 2000 that the first five million are going to buy it, whatever it is, even [if] it didn't have games," he told the site.

This is no different than Nintendo's "Revolution will revolutionize the entire market we r the best, k?" or Microsoft's "Xbox will be the best system of this generation wait and see I'm bill gates sony is dumb for challenging the handheld market here's a billion dollars." Everyone thinks highly of their product but doesn't say anything when their launch line-up doesn't deliver (gamecube) or their system malfunctions within the first month (xbox 360) or within the next year (ps2).

But throwing away my home computer? We'll see about that 6 months after the ps3 is released and the parts are incredibly obsolete.

I agree marcus, it's just that usually it's one or two figureheads throwing around arrogant comments but with Sony it seems like every person in every branch of SCE is lodging their foot firmly in their mouth.

I don't think any company wants to look like they lack confidence. That's no good. But Sony's claim is like saying that cereal will replace pizza as the number one delivered food in the next year. That's just insane.

And Phil Harrison on what he thought of people saying that Sony stole the PS3's motion-sensing controller idea from Nintendo's Wii, Harrison replied,

"When Nintendo released N64 in 1996 and it also used real-time 3D graphics, did we say: 'Nintendo stole our idea!'? No, of course not. What y'all are failing to realize is the Blue Ray Technology. The rays makes the hardware parts...y'know, better.
