    Bat-lesbian

Apparently DC is kicking up a lot of dust by making Batwoman a lesbian.

    http://www.cnn.com/2006/SHOWBIZ/book....ap/index.html

Um...big deal? Everyone likes lesbians...society-wise at least. The only ones I could see caring this much about it is the 700 Club.

I was going to crack a joke about the costume being gay enough, but I think I'll leave that to more talented hands.

People have been discussing what superheros were gay for years. It's about time DC gave them what they wanted.

"She has some past connection with Bruce Wayne. And she's also had a past love affair with one of our lead characters, Renee Montoya."
Oh, wow. I had always hoped.

Well, any friend of Batman is a friend of mine.

Especially when certain life choices keep us from being more than just friends...

Renee Montoya was the tough as nails dark skinned cop in the animated series, right? She was awesome.

We have strong African-American, Hispanic and Asian characters.
            !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd approve of this, if the increase of lesbians in DC Comics meant any more than allowing male writers to be lazy when writing women characters. Where're all of the gay men, EH? Time will tell, I guess.

It's that sort of stance that turns me off toward a lot of these characters. I don't have a problem with heroes representing one social minority or another, but they're marketed as gimmicks. A hero's ethnicity or sexuality should be folded into the whole of his personality, not stamped into his insignia. I thought we'd moved past the days of Apache Chief.

Northstar (Marvel Universe) has been out for years. There are many other examples. This isn't really that shocking, they just want to get more people to read their crap.

No, Marvel's always been the company to spearhead topical questions and sociopolitical realities.

When DC tries it's usually painful to behold.

I was wrong about Firestorm by the way. It was Dan Jolley's writing I was enjoying. Stuart Moore's Jason Rusch is a white kid who talks about black people a lot.

And Gen 13 has always had a Native American lesbian!

Right? Or am I projecting my fantasies again?

Rainmaker. I think she bit the big one, though. I could be wrong, I stopped reading at #25.

At Marvel. Aside from Rawhide Kid, there's always been Northstar and now Billy & Teddy aka Wiccan & Hulkling from Young Avengers (AFAIK, the only gay couple in the same superhero team) and Ultimate Colossus. Not to mention Mystique's been a lesbo since who knows when.

That's RIGHT! I thought Gen 13 handled that rather well.

She was sort of like the Inara of the group. (ZOMG FIREFLY)

I though DC already had a lesbian, Wonder Women. She was an Amazon or something.

There were lesbian Amazons, but I'm pretty sure Wonder Woman's 100% mother figure.
