    Kire's state of gaming

I'm an incredibly picky gamer nowadays. The games I play these days are Rockstar Table Tennis & Fight Night Round 3 online, as well as Suikoden V and making levels on Megaman powered up. I also LOVE Hot Shots, but I've played that to death and I swore I'd cut back on that. The best games I've played in the recent past are Half Life 2 and God of War.

So, that's the setup. Here's my point...when I play a game, I want to either be emotionally compelled, or experience something new. I don't have time for nostolgia. I LOVE a good story, and love even more to play it. Being involved in a good story makes me feel more emotionally involved. This is why Legacy of Kain and Shadow of Destiny will forever be a couple of my all time favorite games. I loved being revealed Kratos's past over time, and the incredible scenery that really made me feel the mythology displayed.

A lot of games today feel like a waste of time to me. I beat all the levels in New Mario for DS and felt disheartened at the end because it felt like I'd wasted a bunch of time on it for a retread. I could go through all the levels and get all the secret coins, but I honestly don't care enough. Brain Training really hasn't had any results I could tell from using it for a month, other than brushing up on my arithmatic. Even Tetris feels boring now because I can breeze through all 20 levels and then it just becomes tedium.

I KNOW I'm incredibly picky...and I KNOW my tastes aren't the norm...that's obvious since I generally thought New Mario was just merely okay, and other examples. Maybe it's because I'm getting older and that I've already played so much. The main things I'm looking for are an immersive, unique experience, and/or a great story...and I love a good competition.

As quick fix DS and Nintendo games get more popular, it worries me because I'm starting to feel more alienated from the general gaming populus. I just have to start getting used to that.

You have every right to be picky when it comes to spending your own money. And I don't think your tastes are that far out of the norm. Sure there are lots of people who love New Mario but I suspect a significant portion of that is nostalgia factor. Which is not to say it's NOT a good game but just that it's one of those things where you can never really know how good it would be on its own merits because there are too many other factors involved.
I want that Mulan McNugget sauce, Morty!

I'm assuming you don't use RPGM, anymore? Not that the games on the tools are guarenteed to amaze you, but I'm quite curious what sort of game you'd wind up creating with such strict standards.

          Thats pretty funny.

Anyways first, whats the deal with Table Tennis, why does everyone love that game so much? Its so mediocre.

Plus here is my problem with God of War, they wasted so much time on trying to make a compelling story, just to end up with a game thats only 5 hours long. I would take less story for more gameplay anyday. Plus I just think Jaffe is a douche.

Once again, I too enjoy a good story, but I think story should always come after good gameplay.

            Watch it, boys.

I can understand what you're going through. And it isn't really all that uncommon. There are many people who would rather immersive and/or totally unique experiences to the popular pick-up-and-play scene these days. You definitely aren't alone.

Though the majority loves the simplicity and fun of Nintendo titles, there's still a market for the types of games you're into. Even on the Wii, there will be such experiences, if what I've seen is any indication.

At any rate, I'd take this seventh generation to contemplate on your position. Who knows? You may find a solid place to find the types of games you like where you least expect it. Don't worry too much about it. Just because your taste differs from everyone else's doesn't mean you're an alien. You can still find common ground.

Or you can you know.... Take a break from games.

Every so often I don't feel like playing games and it bugs me why. Then I just take a month or two break, then it comes back.

I got pickier too, after I played the same game hundreds of times just with a different title each time.

Honestly Ive been playing the crap out of Steambot Chronicles and havent been able to put it down.

I own over 100 PS2 games. Probably closer to 120. and Ive probably beaten 8 of them.

Steambot I just cant put down. Customizing your "mech". and all the options you have in the game. the branching paths. all the cool secrets. Its wonderful.

You should probably look into Monster Rancher and Armored Core too, Kire. Those games have depth. In the case of MR, it's a rare case of being pick-up-and-play AND very deep and immersive.

                        It's a good thing, I think.

I just dont recomend starting with Circus caravan.

But me and loki always talk Steambot Chronicles and its really cool how we both have different things going on in the game and we are at the same place story wise.

I usually go on archaeological digs and build dinosaurs in the museum. He screws around in the port town.

Theres pool and you can gamble. Theres like 13 instruments you can play and get money for playing them.

Get different hair cuts and clothes and stuff. And so much hidden stuff. Its at least worth a rental.

If you want to be emotionaly attached and experience something new, check out ICO and Shadow of the Colossus...you could also try Monster Hunter for something new as well.

                              Agreed.

Pretty soon the only thing we will enjoy doing is yelling at small children that wander onto our lawns. They should make a game that simulates THAT.
