    Advance Wars on PSP!

I picked up Field Commander today, mostly because it looked so much like a PSP version of Advance Wars. Boy was I wrong. It's virtually the same game with far better graphics! Now I hate myself for wasting $35 on AW: DS, since it's the exact same game as AW2, with a different campaign and touch screen compatibility.

It even has a level editor, like AW, which means a lot more on PSP, because you can actually share your missions online.

I've only played a couple tutorials so far, so the jury's still out, but I think this'll be pretty good.

From what I've seen of the game it looked pretty crappy...

There IS a touch screen. The illusion is very well done, I hear.

The touch screen is verily difficult to use for Advance Wars DS, anyway.

I am in LOVE with Field Commander... it's interesting, challenging, fun, and tactical, without being unfairly difficult. It's a blast to play, even in the little home-made missions. I think it is honestly AW's equal in every ascpect. (And yes, the source material is BLATENTLY obvious here. But that's a good thing.)

grrrrrrr....everyone compares it to AW, because AW was the first game of its type that they have ever played. But AW was not the first game of this type, just the first game of this type to become popular.

Yes, it is very similar to AW, but IMO, more fun. It doesnt have the cartoony ness of AW, is a little more realistic, and there isnt any transition to a split screen showing how many of each group are destroyed, the game actually zooms in on a side view of both opponents, and they attack each other.

I'll admit, the graphics are not the most detailed, but it is one of the coolest games of its type that i have ever played. Plus it has MULTIPLE online modes of play, which makes it even that much better.

Well I don't have a PSP so I have no opinion of Field Commander either way. What I want to know is what's better between Advance Wars and Age of Kings on DS. The only real complain I've heard about Kings is that it's nearly impossible to accurately choose units with the stylus because they overlap and everything but I use the D-pad with AW anyway so that wouldn't matter.

                    I've never had that problem...ever.

I figured that. It seemed to me like one of those things all the reveiwers repeat just because somebody else said it.

Well I find it quicker to cycle through my units with the Dpad. It sounds to me like someone just wanted something to complain about.

There is an NES game called Dessert Commander, and I think there was another one on NES called Conflict. Then there was Super Conflict on SNES.

They all have the same roots, but Field Commander and Advance Wars are so similar if you've ever played Advance Wars you probably don't even need to play the tutorials in FC to figure it out.

                            Re: Advance Wars on PSP!

Yeah, of course everyone stopped playing Super Conflict because it had a short battery backup and everyone I know who had a copy now can't save ever (kind of important in a game as long as that one). There is also another series on the PS2/Xbox/PC called Dai Senryaku (now up to version seven used to be a Japan exclusive I believe) that is more like Super Conflict than Advance Wars, including the Hexagonal grid as opposed to a square one, though it is boring as hell even for a strategy game. Plus there are just way to many stats to keep track of and 5 levels of sky, and Aircraft Carriers with deployable airplanes (sometimes up to 7 or something like that). Needless to say the game got very complicated very quickly with so many troops on the field. I didn't find it as fun as Advance Wars, or even Super Conflict, and if you want a story look elsewhere since the story is basically Red Team is in a battle with Blue Team (the actual team names).

And since I don't have a PSP I won't be picking this up, though if I had a PSP this would probably be one of my first games on it, as I can't pass up a good turn based strategy game.

I'm not really much interested in the story, though if I want to play a strategy game that complex I'll settle for something like PTO, where you aren't just fighting a single battle, your fighting the entire war.
