    Magazine idiocy

Bad writing ****** me off. Bad jokes **** me off. Stupid, ****ing hacks **** me off.

It's no secret Game Informer is bad but I got the recent issue today (through some ill-concieved pact I made with Gamestop some indeterminable amount of time ago), thumbed through it to see the pretty screen shots and found a "humor" column about overrated games. Here's what they roast:

    - Grand Theft Auto III
    - Starcraft
    - Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
    - Resident Evil 2
    - Ico
    - Halo
    - Super Mario Bros.
    - Katamari Damacy
    - Metal Gear Solid
    - Final Fantasy VII

Wow, original right? As if the internets didn't make fun of all these a million years ago. But Super Mario Bros.? Katamari? Really?

I'd brush this off as tongue-in-cheek drollery if not for the fact that NONE of it is funny, MOST of it is gay jokes (Link's a fairy lol, Mario's moustache lol, Sephiroth x Cloud lol), the rest of it is complaints we've ALL heard before (Resident Evil's acting is poor, Yorda is useless) yet there are some actual, valid criticisms to be found (Halo's poor level design, GTA3's nothing but minigames, Starcraft's aggrivating multiplayer) making the whole article a useless, unfocused, outdated, easy to write waste of time and print. Its mere existence is enough to fry my beans.

Oh, and the latest EGM says a FF7 remake is really happening despite NO announcement of such a thing whatsoever WTF

I don't read magazines anymore, and apparently I made a good move, doing that.

I didn't get my EGM, although my subscription definitely isn't over.

EGM was really week this month. Sparce E3 coverage and a article on the Wii still calling it the Revolution.

I still like Play, but it's super happy, we love everything attitude grew real old real quick.

But Game Informer? Terrrible. You're right Magus. The writing isn't just bad, but it's lazy too. Did you see the "Game Infarcer" section in the April issue? Oh man. The most cliche jokes possible in an extended April Fool's gag. I was embarsed for them.

Embarrassing. Yes. That's the word. And Play does see everything through happy-happy rose-colored glasses. Remember they had Product Number 3 on their cover? PRODUCT NUMBER 3. Does ANYONE REMEMBER that game??

And I cannot trust their anime reviews. Their anime reviews. In a gaming mag. What are they, GameFan?

Play reminds me off the 12 year old kid who thinks that if something is animated and that it comes from Japan, then it must be the best thing ever.

Which is okay for a 12 year old kid, he's got his whole life to learn better. But Play? C'mon! You're a grown-up magazine. You need to move out of your mother's basement and throw out your Dirty Pair wallscrolls. Then, maybe, I'll buy you again, instead of just flipping through you at Barnes & Nobles.

Exactly. Their design department is pretty good. But why can't their writers be up to snuff? These are published writers and they all suck. Why can't... why can't...

Someone like MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE write for these rags?

I got the chops. Look at all those italics.

I liked PN03. What's wrong with PN03? Did you ever play it?

No, because of middling to merely average reviews: http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/562549.asp

I might pick it up if just to have it and experience some of it, in fact, I've intended to do so but I never actually... did so. Killer 7 as well.

                    Re: Magazine idiocy

I think PN03 got too much attention for it's own good. It's an old school style shooter which is a niche genre these days. I think people were expecting it to be something else.

                      I think OniLink had a PNo3 Avatar.

Yeah, that article was stupid and didn't make sense. In the May 2005 EGM issue, they had a familiar article. Although that article kind of made me mad, it at least made some good points! This GI article was just plain retarded. I mean, come on? Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time? Super Mario Brothers? They're not overrated. They are the greatest games of all time and they deserved the respect they've gotten. I swear, it sounds like one of my friends had written this.

Aaaaaaaactually... SE recently mentioned at their recent business meeting that FFVII has been transformed into a 20-year project (1997-2017), thanks to the success of the FFVII spin-offs and Advent Children, which means we'll be seeing more FFVII stuff in the forseeable future. Inasmuch, a FFVII remake isn't really far-fetched. EGM likely came to that conclusion after learning the aforementioned.

Likewise, Fabula Nova Crystallis, the FFXIII project name, will be a 10-year project (2007-2017).

I'm wondering, though, what if FFXIII isn't that well received?
