New film coming in June: Who Killed the Electric Car?

    Here's a trailer:

Remember what I've written about? I'm not the only one with those sentiments, and one of them-there librul' Hollywood types got themselves involved on this issue.

Gas prices are $2.79 where I live. They are helping delay my own car some more. I hope to get it drivable this summer, and perhaps get some videos of me doing stupid things on the highway with it. Ever see an electric car fly down a highway at 140+ mph? You just might.

Who made Steve Gutenburg a star? Who holds back the electric car?

I bet the same people that killed electric cars would downvote a movie highlighting them

Re: New film coming in June: Who Killed the Electric Car?

Interesting how the bad ratings are all the exact same number from the exact same age group. Someone's been spamming that tally more likely than not, considering the film has only been shown at a select few film festivals.

I found this little comment interesting:

As a former engineer with both GM and Ford, I have to thoroughly refute what a previous commenter has stated about likely explanations. With the technology of the powertrain/fuel source development that far along, that far advanced within a viable vehicle, crash-safety and equipment regulations would not have removed this from the marketplace. The "skin" and tub/framework of the vehicle would have been either reworked to comply or the powertrain/fuel source would have been adapted to fit existing car lines that meet crash-safety and equipment regulations. There are plenty of examples of "hurry up" retro-fits in Detroit/Dearborn's history. Unfortunately there is much documented history of technology being quashed, patents being bought and buried, innovations left by the wayside to discourage change, discourage having to retool, reinvent, reinvest...and if you don't think that auto/oil/gov are all complicit in this, how naive can one be? GM and the railroads, the Tucker, fuel injection, Wankel engine, anti-lock brakes...all quashed by powerful companies and people not wanting change no matter what the benefit would be in safety, society, or the environment.

                    Terr,

I'm looking to do a persuasive speech on the subject, but I need a call to action. Are there any organizations one can participate in to be proactive in getting EVs back in the works? Any petitions, websites or the like you can direct me to?
Took me 15 minutes to remember how to change my signature, and this is all I came up with.

Also, I have a topic on politics and EVs buried on these forums. If you're interested in what the auto companies, oil companies, and federal government did to stall the electric car, all claims cited and proven, I'll post the link.

The auto industry doesn't want them in the American market because they require very little maintenance. No tune ups, oil changes, or any of that crap. Electric motors have one rotating part and last in excess of 500,000 miles with no repairs. Aftermarket parts and services account for roughly 50% of the auto industry's profit margins, and the electric car directly threatens that revenue.

The oil industry is also threatened by the electric car. Roughly 40% of the oil America consumes is made into gasoline for automobiles. This is the oil industry's largest source of revenue.

Further, the G8 nations make more revenue on oil taxes than Opec makes on oil itself. Further, these governments want to grow the economy, and electric cars would dramatically reduce consumer spending and resource consumption, possibly shrinking the economy and revenues to both industry and government. So the world's leading governments don't want to have their tax revenue compromised or their economic growth compromised.

The only problem is, we have limited resources. Unrestrained growth cannot continue in a world of finite resources, so it's a race to see who can consume the most and make the most money.

Dean Devlin-produced look at the fate of the EV-1.
                          by IGN Staff

May 15, 2006 - In 1996 a number of EV-1 electric cars began appearing on California's highways. The General Motors-produced vehicle was fast, ran quietly, produced no polluting exhaust and it ran without gasoline... and then, suddenly, it was gone.

The documentary, Who Killed the Electric Car?, from producer Dean Devlin and filmmaker Chris Paine, chronicles the life and mysterious death of the groundbreaking vehicle, examining its cultural and economic ripple effects and how they reverberated through the halls of government and big business.

Filmmakers make the case that the death of the EV-1 was, in fact, a murder. They claim to show that production of the revolutionary car was halted due to pressure from industries that would be harmed by the proliferation of electric car technology.

Who Killed the Electric Car?, a 2006 selection at the Tribeca and Sundance film festivals, interviews and investigates automakers, legislators, engineers, consumers and car enthusiasts from Los Angeles to Detroit, to work through motives and alibis, and to solve the complex mystery.

Who Killed the Electric Car?, from Sony Pictures Classics, opens in New York and L.A. on June 28 and will further expand this summer. It's been rated PG for "brief mild language."
