It depends on what you are wanting to host there. I know rhydia.net (I could be wrong on the name, I forget) is really good for artists, and are very protective. :P I'd look around and stay away from alot of the big names, they tend to be rather expensive.
Well 1and1 has some good deals going. They are who I have my domain through, and when I get a job I will buy some hosting with them since comcast won't let you host your own servers :P. Another big webhosting company is GoDaddy, they seem to leapfrog with 1and1 in terms of deals and offer Java which 1and1 doesn't. So between those two with 1and1 you get free domain names included in the package and is a bit cheaper for the same space/transfer amount, but GoDaddy has more software options. Both have all kinds of webpage creation tools, and around 500MB of database space with 1and1 having their own database format in addition to MySQL. So those are the two companies I would recommend since they seem to have the best deals with
50GB of space and 500GB transfer being $5-7.50/month and 100GB space with 1TB transfer being $10-$13/month.
Net Firms had a deal going for a whole year of at least 20 gigabytes storage (I think) and 750 GB a month transfer all for under $10 total. Two free domain names too. I forget the deal coupon code or if it still works but check the Anandtech Hot Deals forums before you decide on anything.
The only thing I don't like about Netfirms thus far is I can't allow directory viewing.
Well some ISPs don't allow servers (Comcast for example), so that is not always an option. Plus it does take a lot more work to get it all up and running, and it will probably be slower since most ISPs don't have more than maybe 400Kb/s upload rates, though you do have unlimited bandwidth that way. I'm curious how much dyndns charges for domains as I get mine for $5.99/yr through 1and1.com and it's the cheapest I've found so far for a .com, and I get to have email aliases with it too and a free email account (not like I need one though), of course .info sites are free. I tried to look but you have to create a account to look at anything, and thats too much of a hassle.
