If Colbert were to be off'ed, everybody and their mother would know who was behind it right now.

They won't off him. They'll just make his life a living hell, so Colbert will wish they whacked him.

I dunno, I heard these functions were traditionally roasts. Besides, there's not anything they'd do do him he wouldn't tell the whole world about.

They didn't kill him, they just had the mainstream press excise his presence from the event. Seriously, if you look, the references to him and his performance in major newspapers and such you'll find very few. Even C-SPAN cut him out of their replays. It's only the blogosphere that is talking about it.

Looks like the truth really does hurt.

Eh, he was ok. He had a few genuinely funny moments. But he seemed really nervous and messed up a few of his lines. But hey, I can't blame him, I'd have been nervous too. I still think he could have been more creative with some of his jokes instead of sporting the anti-Bush dogma. But some of his were good, such as his crack on the generals and his crack against the media.

His delivery isn't as polished as Jon Stewart's is, even on his show he flubs lines from time to time. There's a big difference between mocking someone on a show, and doing it when they're looking you in the eye. I'm still impressed that he got through it at all.

Actually, his dogma is pro-bush, but the basis of his jokes is firmly grounded in actual events, so I don't think it's fair to say he's spouting anti-bush dogma. Maybe the jokes he used weren't alien to anyone else's ears but the President's, however it's the context of the delivery that makes it an incredible performance.

When was the last time anyone outside of the DC press corps had anything to say about the White House Correspondents Dinner? When was the last time the leader of the free world had to get up and shake the hand of the man that had just ridiculed him in front of the nation? If the things Colbert had said were delivered in anything but comedic form, the Secret Service would have hustled his ass off the stage.

Jon Stewart isn't as polished as Jon Stewart. Have you seen Daily Show lately? This week it's been clunker after clunker, I barely register a response watching anymore unless Jason Jones is on. Which is upsetting because I like Jon.

The audience also seems to have gone over to the Colbert side as they're obviously on the edge of their seats, anticipating the obligatory repartee the two share at the end of each episode, which is pretty much guaranteed to be the funniest part of the Daily Show now. When Colbert couldn't show up for one the crowd let made sure their disappointment was heard.

Not that I'm trying to start a ZOMG STEWT VS. COLBITER debate. Just thought I'd mention that.

199...6? I believe. Don Imus savaged Clinton, hitting him EXTREMELY hard about Monica and his infidelity, as well as other things.

                              Monica was 1997, at least.
