Having just completed Dragon Quest VIII, I decided to go on a little "expidition" on the internet, and I was surprised by what I found.
Back in 1992, I played my very first RPG, Dragon Warrior, on my NES. For some reason I didn't understand, I was drawn to the game. I even watched the cartoon, so my typical day was watching the Dragon Warrior anime on early morning TV, going to school, then playing Dragon Warrior on the NES when I got home. Those were the days. Unfortunately, since I haven't seen the DW anime in almost or exactly 14 years, I didn't remember it much.
Last night, I landed a goldmine. I found three episodes of the DW anime released in the USA in 1992 for download. Oddly enough, and albeit the bad quality of the episodes I downloaded, it's starting to come back to me, I remember the anime more clearly now. I was too young to realize it then, but now I realize that in 1992, this anime/cartoon was the closest videogame cartoon to the actual videogame. I didn't understand the story, but I now realize that it follows the DW/Q3 storyline VERY closely, to the point the Anime even uses its music, and its characters.
Back in 1992, this was ahead of all the other cartoons that only loosely followed the games they were based on. The Mario Bros. cartoon went its own direction, and only loosely followed the storyline of the japanese game. (Not that the storyline in Mario Bros was ever that detailed to begin with). Not the same with the Dragon Warrior anime. It looks dated by today's standards, but it is still a treat to be able to relive that old chapter of my childhood.
Do any of you have any fond childhood memories of videogame cartoons, or evenjust cartoons or anime in general?
