    Videogame Cartoons

Having just completed Dragon Quest VIII, I decided to go on a little "expidition" on the internet, and I was surprised by what I found.

Back in 1992, I played my very first RPG, Dragon Warrior, on my NES. For some reason I didn't understand, I was drawn to the game. I even watched the cartoon, so my typical day was watching the Dragon Warrior anime on early morning TV, going to school, then playing Dragon Warrior on the NES when I got home. Those were the days. Unfortunately, since I haven't seen the DW anime in almost or exactly 14 years, I didn't remember it much.

Last night, I landed a goldmine. I found three episodes of the DW anime released in the USA in 1992 for download. Oddly enough, and albeit the bad quality of the episodes I downloaded, it's starting to come back to me, I remember the anime more clearly now. I was too young to realize it then, but now I realize that in 1992, this anime/cartoon was the closest videogame cartoon to the actual videogame. I didn't understand the story, but I now realize that it follows the DW/Q3 storyline VERY closely, to the point the Anime even uses its music, and its characters.

Back in 1992, this was ahead of all the other cartoons that only loosely followed the games they were based on. The Mario Bros. cartoon went its own direction, and only loosely followed the storyline of the japanese game. (Not that the storyline in Mario Bros was ever that detailed to begin with). Not the same with the Dragon Warrior anime. It looks dated by today's standards, but it is still a treat to be able to relive that old chapter of my childhood.

Do any of you have any fond childhood memories of videogame cartoons, or evenjust cartoons or anime in general?

I used to watch The Super Mario Bros. Super Show every time it was on. Oh, Captain Lou...

I also used to tape every episode of Captain N and Super Mario Bros. 3, then Super Mario World when it came on.

What game was Princess Lana supposed to be in?

The Super Mario Bros. cartoons. All three series. I barely remember them either, but based on my vague memory, I think the first series was played out like a saga instead of just a series of one-shot episodes. Super Mario Bros 3 was interesting, though I didn't realize back then how different the Koopalings were from their video game counterparts. Mario World...actually, I didn't like that one all that much. They made Yoshi too much like a baby. And that horrible voice. "Mama Luigi".

I also watched The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog (the wacky cartoon), and SatAM. I liked the wackiness of the former and the adventure of the latter. I think I might have also caught a bit of the third series (involving Sonic being a rock guitarist?), but I'm not sure.

There's also Donkey Kong Country. That one sucked.

I don't remember much of any series, though. I don't think I've seen every episode of them either.

I tend to follow the Rockman.EXE anime. It's nice if you're a fan of the series.

I'm scared to see the Ruby Spears catroon... but it's got Ring Man... SO... CONFLICTED...

In the future, I hope to somehow be involved in a MegaMan Classic animated series, in addition to heading a game dev studio.

I suppose I should count the first two Pokemon series, as I was in high school, thus, "childhood memories". I liked them so much better than the later series. Especially the St. Anne 3-parter. I was not expecting a cliffhanger in a continuity series that ended every episode with "To Be Continued" (a decision 4Kids made that I question every time I think about it). Granted, I missed the first six episodes; the series started with a technical 3-parter.

I like the darkstalkers anime (the 4 OVAs, NOT the US animated series). I love the visual style of the Street Fighter Alpha/Zero movie, but the rest of it is garbage.

Not a videogame cartoon(although it did have some games made after it), but I absolutely love Beavis and Butthead.

I used to follow the Sonic the Hedgehog cartoons, especially the comical one. The only episode I remember clearly was when Tails stepped on some magical chewing gum and became faster than Sonic.
I watched a few episodes of the more serious adventure series. Didn't they cut that off the moment they were planning to introduce Knuckles or something?
                        Such a shame...

I downloaded a few episodes of that Sonic X cartoon as well, but it didn't seem all that entertaining. Plus they had Sonic and Knuckles go head to head and Sonic was victorious, when we all know Knuckles should have won, because Sonic's a meany arrogant poopyface.

I probably liked the comical one better as well. I was 10, at the most. Slapstick cartoons were the way to go. The one I remember most was when Robotnik was talking to Sonic via screen, and Sonic jumped up, drew on Robotnik's face on the screen, and when Robotnik turned around in his lair, he had his face all skrewed up.

To my understanding, SatAM ended with a bit of a cliffhanger, just as a new villain was about to be revealed. I never saw the cliffhanger myself.
