I'm trying to decide what RPGM to make my next game on. I have all three now, and I'm jonesing to make a strat-rpg along the lines of Gladius with elements from FFTAdvance thrown in for good measure. I know RPGM2 would probably be the ideal place for a game like this, but in order for me to make this game come to life, I need to learn the entire system first, as I'd probably have to go in and muck around with the actual system data, and I don't know how to do that yet. Long story short, I want my next game to be out within the foreseeable future, not 2 years down the road once I learn all the intricacies of RPGM2. I might make it on RPGM3 first, and then do a sequel or remake on #2. The sticking point of making it on three is having no available option for a character select screen, which will probably mean, lame as it is, that you will only have 4 characters to use for the entire game. I already figured out that having any type of character select would go way over the 50 lines of "code" that is the maximum per mode. Sigh. Anyway, that is my idea for my next game. I have a halfway finished game that I worked on before my current game, Series 1: Destiny Beckons, that I might polish up and release as a demo, or possibly flesh out into an entire game. The thing is, after all the options I put into Series 1, I think anything else would be a letdown, as it would probably just be a straightforward RPG with nothing special about it. Which is why I want to try a different genre, such as strat-rpg. I'll try to make something decent on 3, I guess, and then go from there.

Re: Series 2???
That's what you get for not learning it all EARLIER. Seriously, it's not that hard. RPG Maker XP's RGSS is MUCH harder, but you don't even have to go past the basics of the original Ruby scripting language(which seems like a lot to learn at first, but it's deceptively simple) to make good XP scripts.Originally posted by PerversionI know RPGM2 would probably be the ideal place for a game like this, but in order for me to make this game come to life, I need to learn the entire system first, as I'd probably have to go in and muck around with the actual system data, and I don't know how to do that yet. As I've mentioned previously in other threads, I just got my PS2 this year, and only got RPGM2 a month or two after number 3 came out, so I've not had time to do anything with it yet, as all my efforts are going towards finishing Series 1 on RPGM3.Last edited by Perversion; 08-15-2007, 02:44 AM.

That won't even be possible on RPGM1 or RPGM3.I'm jonesing to make a strat-rpg along the lines of Gladius with elements from FFTAdvance thrown in for good measure."What if like...there was an exact copy of you somewhere, except they're the opposite gender, like you guys could literally have a freaky friday moment and nothing would change. Re: Series 2???
And it's barely possible with "2"
It's a major amount of work. But, I'm currently making a wrestling game, so if you want it bad enough, just about anythings possible.
I recently spent some time tinkering with a stick figure version of a Mortal Kombat like fighting game. I used the vfx editor for all the characters and animations, it was tough getting things to look right. I wasn't planning on finishing it, it was just an excercise to hone skills. It would take forever to actually finish it.
Bro, it's just way more satisfying to create with 2, it's much more expressive. I've only had it a little over a month and I can already do some intricate things. It won't take two years. Its difficulty is greatly exaggerated.
I don't even know if I'll finish my game on "3" anymore, when I look back on it, I had to make so many compromises. I think it will just be "cookie cutter". I'm keeping "3" to see other peoples games though.
with "2", you'll be able to make something that is truly and uniquely your creation.

Re: Series 2???
2 is complicated, but not hard.
If you want a strategy game it is either 2 or a "real" programming language!
Even if it does take 2 years, so what? If you enjoy the creation process, then it is 2 years well spent.
I personally enjoy making stuff more than I care about actually finishing a game. To me the process is more important than the finished product. It's an exercise in logic and I don't get enough of those since finishing school.
For the same price as a video game, you can get Motion Artist 3.0 (from e-frontiers) and make Flash Games!
I just got it and that is why I have been quiet this past week.
Is fun! I'll have something to show for it soon...
Peace.

Re: Series 2???
Depending on how much effort you put into a game (especially if it's a full-length RPG), it will take quite some time to finish making one. I think part of the problem is that a bunch of us took one look at RPGM2's complexity and turned away from it, only to come back some months later. It'll still take at least a few months of fiddling around with it before you're able to do the most advanced stuff. Plus some people are faster learners than others.I've only had it a little over a month and I can already do some intricate things. It won't take two years. Its difficulty is greatly exaggerated."What if like...there was an exact copy of you somewhere, except they're the opposite gender, like you guys could literally have a freaky friday moment and nothing would change. Re: Series 2???
My thoughts exactly. Granted, I'm talking about RPGM3, but you still have to have some logic skill in order to do anything intricate. I've been telling people that Series 1 is the only thing keeping my brain going right now. I'm taking a math class at the local community college, but, even though I had not taken a math class in 17 years, it came back to me like nothing, so it's really not a challenge. RPGM is the only thing that challenges me right now in my life. I just need to push back my fear and begin futzing around with #2 now. I think I might just try to create SOMETHING with RPGM2, not set my goals so high right off the bat, or I know what's going to happen. I'm going to be disappointed that things aren't going smoothly enough or quickly enough, or I'm gonna get lost in trying to make custom battle systems, etc., and just give up on the whole process. But then again, you never know, because I think I stretched the boundaries of RPGM3 in Series 1, so maybe 2 will come to me quicky. Who knows? Anyway, thanks for all the active interest in my idea, even though I know I'm not the first one to come up with it. Who knows, though? Maybe I'll be the first one to actually MAKE something out of that idea.Originally posted by RodakIt's an exercise in logic and I don't get enough of those since finishing school.Last edited by Perversion; 08-15-2007, 02:45 AM.

Re: Series 2???
Just keep in mind, even a custom camera system can confuse your brain into mush. Although in actuality, it mostly looks confusing. As long as you know what you're doing, it's simple enough."What if like...there was an exact copy of you somewhere, except they're the opposite gender, like you guys could literally have a freaky friday moment and nothing would change. Re: Series 2???
It's taken me 3-4 years to finish Light Warrior on RPGM2. Along the way,
I was learning the system, and building the game at the same time. Whenever I learn a better way to do things, I went back and altered things.
Enjoy the creation, and get a good list of your favorite songs together on CD or whatever, and listen to that while you work, turning them off for BGM and SFX testing/choosing. Trust me, listening to the RPGM2 music straight for hours at a time for 2 years, isn't the best thing for your sanity.

What do you mean? I've done that non-stop for years and I'm perfectly insane.Originally posted by KumoShinagiTrust me, listening to the RPGM2 music straight for hours at a time for 2 years, isn't the best thing for your sanity.

Perversion, I can tell you one thing. This idea is going to take you a long time. I hope you have plenty of free time and good luck. This should be quite a game to look forward to, IMO.I had to change accounts. I'm here now - http://www.pavilionboards.com/forum/member.php?u=1475

Re: Series 2???
and it's a good start just to make "something", I've learned so much that way. I have a working real time battle system with Dragon punches and stuff and I'm probaly not going to use it as it is, but I learned SO MUCH creating it. I have the confidence now to try about anything(except a strat Rpg!lol).
good luck
and have fun!
I'm currently making a wrestling game
I'm calling it, Blitz Battle High.
It's an homage to old-school Technos games(Renegade, River City Ransom, Super Dodgeball). Its gonna be sort of like a SD Def Jam.
If I can do it, I know you can, with all the complex scripting you did in three.
and Rodak
that program sounds cool, How intricate can you get with it?

Re: Series 2???
I mentioned it in another post, but I recorded 1-3 minute pieces of all the themes from RPGM3 on a minidisc, and listen to it every night as I go to sleep. It soothes me into a restful slumber. And when I say every night, I mean, I recorded it about a month and a half after I got RPGM3, which I got the day it came out; and literally EVERY night since then, I've listened to it. Wait, I think I listened to PSO music a few times too. I don't know what it is about video game music, but it seems to bring me a more peaceful night's sleep.Originally posted by Vessel of JamosWhat do you mean? Also, why does my post for a theoretical game I've not yet made and am only dreaming about have more views than the thread for the game I HAVE made, and is almost ready to be released, located under the game forums, which only has about 60 views?
I guess it's because more people view RPG Maker General than Game Forums.Last edited by Perversion; 08-15-2007, 02:46 AM.
