My week keeps getting worse. PS2 died.

tried playing wild arms alter code F for a bit, wouldnt load. just showed "reading disc" non-stop. so I figure okay, it's a dual layer disc, these things are known to have problems. so I try Megaman X Collection. loud GRINDING sounds are heard, followed by rapid-fire clicking. WTF. turn it on it's side, same thing. now the grinding sounds are louder and more abrasive sounding than even the DC's load times. open it up, clean it, put it back together, same crap. figure "maybe it can still play CDs" so I put in RPG Maker. Same crap.

Anyone have any ideas what I should do? I dont think I'll be able to stand not having a PS2. any cleaning or fixing tips are appreciated.

I have tried cleaning the discs, and the lens. neither worked.

its the old fat-ass model, purchased in 2002.

The timing just couldnt be worse, I have server crap to replace, contest prizes to get and send out, and now this. no telling when I'll have the money to get another one, so I really want to fix this if at all possible.

I know that when I get a new PS2, its gonna be a slimline. I have horrible luck with the big ones.

This is your 67th PS2, correct? I say boycott SONY and make a lot of SONY hate threads. Or just trade it in at EB and get a new one.

it's my third. first was japanese launch model, nephew fell on it, never worked again. second was US launch model, stopped working about a year and a half after I got it.

I cant trade it in, as it doesnt work, and it's been opened in the past to fix previious problems.

You can trade in broken systems at EB. You just get less trade in credit than you would for a working system. I've done it before. I traded in a PS2, open, and in pieces with no controllers maybe 6 months ago. I got $40 credit for it and got a used PS2.

This problem sounds just like one I had a while back. The damn thing just wouldn't load anything. Turns out dust was clogging things up. Have you tried vaccuming dust out of it? I know it sounds crazy, but it worked for me. What do you got to lose?

            ...Since it's already lost.

The thick PS2s got better during the shipment before the US Slimline announcement. At least, mine has been working. The worst problem I had with it is the Max Drive is a little slow to load, but that's probably normal considering the type of disk it is.

well, I tried adjusting the white gear inside the drive, and got it to read DVDs/Game DVDs occasionally. they still have problems though. no matter what position the gear was in, I just couldnt get dual layer games (like wild arms alter code f) or CDs (like RPGM2 and PS1 games) to work.

Is it a grinding noise, or do it just sound like a loud loading? Because I had an issue where my PS2 was making an absolute RACKET playing PS1 games. I actually solved it by simply putting scotch tape all around the opening in the middle of the discs. Just make a box with the tape around the hole (four pieces), then make a pentagram (another four pieces diagonal to the first four), etc. Solved the noise problem. As for the loading problem, I dunno.

yup, its a loud grinding noise. it stopped though. tried the tape, does nothing. think its the motor.

Have you tried putting the ps2 vertically? It works for me on some problem cds.

Well, I got mine to read DVDs, PS2 CDs, and Dual Layer DVDs. PS1 games get a "please insert PS or PS2 format disc" message. this is good enough, I suppose. I did this by adjusting the small screw next to the laser, as opposed top the white gear (which did nothing at all)

it's not the most cost efficient method, but if you can afford it, i'd just trade it in and get a new ps2. forget messing around with it and hoping for something to work.

or you could try living without until ps3 gets released.. a true test of willpower.

That is a true test of silly.

I'm glad that you manage to have something work on the PS2. What is up with playstations and dying? I've had 4 PS and I'm on my third PS2... times like that make wish that I had a gamecube, but then I wouldn't be able to use my beloved RPGM2.

What I want to know is, why is the PS2 the best selling console of this generation, and yet it has the weakest processor of the three current gen systems, and always breaks down? I just recently jumped on the Playstation bandwagon (never had a PS1 or PS2 until last year). I was not willing to plunk good money down on a system that might last me 2 years if I was lucky. But once I began seeing all the strat-rpgs on the PS2 (Nippon Ichi mostly), I knew I could not hold out any longer. And then I decided to buy RPGM3 brand new (my first brand new game for the PS2) and the rest is history.
