2D vs. 3D (the struggle for creative freedom)

this is an old topic of discussion, but i feel like it's still relevant. especially now with PS3, Xbox 360 and the Revolution. developers are pretty much discouraged from even making anything other than a 3D game for various reasons.

does anybody actually think we've reached the peak of creative 2D game design?

sure, the psp, ds and gba are all places to see the latest 2D games available, but what about the power of current consoles?? isn't it logical to think that more could be done for 2D on those? we see 3D realism evolving, but what about making 2D resemble the highest quality animation we've yet to see?

My dream is a side-scrolling Castlevania with Guilty Gear quality sprites.

That would be a monumental amount of animation.

I'm making a 2d game right now, but I don't think it's going to be groundbreaking. My friends and I are just learning, so we're going to try and do all the neat things we can. We've got some nice particle effects, haha.

2D hasn't been fully tapped yet. But it seems like a pain to draw thousands of sprites.

3D IMO is easier than 2D for me. I'm no expert on 3D but I find it much less time consuming that 2D.

I guess that's the thing...2D takes a lot longer to do an anim than 3D.

              No.

Publishers won't let developers have that kind of freedom.

2D was discarded with the Saturn, the last modern console that was designed for 2D to the detriment of 3D. What that console lost to the PSX and its fancy 3D graphics 2D died.

Which isn't to say I'm anti-2D. Hell, one of my favorite games is Tales of Eternia (Tales of Destiny 2 in the US), and that's a lovely example of 2D.

I think the idea of seeing an amazing, non-handheld, 2D game is mouth watering, but only because you know it would have to be amazing to break this market.

Alien Hominid was a great game. I like the art style, but it didn't exactly hit big markets. I got it, though.

that's why it's not easy, because for 2D to be acceptable alternative, any new 2D console game is going to have to be a work of art.

so, with all that said, the reason why we're not seeing any beautiful 2D characters and gorgeous layered backgrounds is because the development community is lazy? add to that is the fact most courses or game design programs in schools center around 3D character creation and gameplay, so we're essentially teaching no one how to appreciate or work with 2D. it's like a second-hand style anymore! that's not right.

                              Again...No.

Infact 3 of my buddies in school worked on a project that was 2d with an incredible artistic style. They used 3d to create all their objects, animations, and assets and used an engine one of them wrote to convert everything into sprites. It was quick, fast, and the outcome was beautiful. The technology is there and people are willing to do it.
