    Tim Rogers Defends FFXII

Final Fantasy XII has been, unsurprisingly, phenomenally successful in Japan. However, oddly enough, a significant number of Japanese gamers are actually violently complaining about select aspects of it.

    Tim Rogers Retaliates

I can honestly say that, judging from his comments (he's played the game extensively), the game may even be more successful in the US than Japan, both critically and commercially.

    Well, at least critically.

    ..
I'm probably the only person on this planet who doesn't care about FF and wishes that every new FF was the truly the "FINAL" game..

    At least it looks pretty.

Someone said earlier here that the game played like a water down KOTOR, that gives me lots of reasons for worry.

I'll have to pick up the demo sometime.

The more I read about this game, the more I think someone over at Square Enix was playing a lot of Bioware games and got some ideas in his head. The Gambit system just sounds like a souped up version of the Baldur's Gate/Icewind Dale/KOTOR system.

I just didn't like the long pauses. It doesn't feel as fluid as KOTOR was. KOTOR seemed like the character actually didn't pause and was interacting with the enemy, instead of just swiping at him like he wasn't there.

Everything is color-coded (blue windows for healing Gambits, red for attacking, gray for switched-off Gambits)
and yet another Square battle system kicks the crotches of color blind people everywhere. They just had to make one of the windows gray. for many color blind people, EVERY color is gray. at least if the third was say... yellow, fully color blind people could still have a chance of differentiating what they are. but no. they had to pick gray. which means that each window will be guesswork. is that gray blue? is that gray red? is that... gray, like the other two? which gray is gray?

I actually agree with the Japanese fans on complaint number four. this seems like the least Final Fantasy of all Final Fantasies. doesn't mean I won't like it, it just seems like a hell of a departure from the series' roots.

That's one of the things that perks my interest for XII. I like that they're questioning conventions that they established (both thematic and gameplay). Some things remain in the FF series that are there simply because they've always been. When first instituted there were limitations on the technology and the breadth of the fan-base that didn't allow for breaking more ground.

Those limitations have been eliminated or vastly reduced and when the series was young, it was incredibly innovative. I don't see it as being less FF-ish, but maybe it's less like the particular game that some fans first fell in love with.

My first experience was with IV, but VI was what really set the hooks in. Even so, when I went back and played the first and second installments in the series, I was amazed at how well they held up...II in particular, was way ahead of its time. It's nice to hear that new risks are being taken with gameplay AND story, instead of relying on increased graphical display as a crutch.

                  All those complaints were dumb.

                  "Difficulty is too high"
Yeah, DEE DE DEEEEs don't like the difficulty, especially if it actually rewards common sense.

"DUR I'mma fight that giant squid just laying around, minding it's own BUSINESS, because it didn't kill me in teh other gammes!"

License and gambit systems too complicated!? Gambit, not even close. The license system, MAYBE. So, the sphere board in X, or the mantra system in DDS 2 was A PIECE OF CAKE THEN!? I guess SRPGs should be taken off the face of the earth, because IT'S OBVIOUS THIS IS TOO COMPLEX.

                  LOL INSTRUCTION MANUAL.

"I want to press buttons." "I don't want to watch my videogame."

WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING WITH MOST GAMES TODAY DUMBASS!? My brain hurts, moving on...

"The game rips off of Star Wars"
Yes, BECAUSE STAR WARS IS THE ONLY MOVIE WORTHY OF RIPPING ANYTHING OUT OF. 'Bout time people read up on the story. Oh wait, GAMERS DON'T NEED TO READ!

                  "The music stinks"
Stop humping Uematsu's leg will ya? Nothing good comes from being a fanboy. Except maybe hundreds of ignorant people agreeing with you.

HEY LET'S GET POMPEI IN THERE, THAT'D MAKE GUUUUUD BATL MUZIK!

While I'm not exactly in love with the lack of good battle music, it's not gonna kill me, I rarely listen to it, plus the tunes that are already there are pretty good.

"This isn't Final Fantasy... it's just a brand now"
Kids, this is your brain on stupidity. VII was the obvious reminder of this change. It was never a significant entity in the first place. How one takes so long to figure that out is beyond me. Another example of "OMG CHANGE NOOOOOOOOOO"

Why don't they make the game in braille while they're at it.

                      Re: Tim Rogers Defends FFXII

Having played the demo and having read everything about the full version, what really cracks me up is how completely similar the battle system seems to be to the old ATB system. The battles are non-random now, but otherwise, they seem pretty identical. There's still a little bar that fills up while you wait for your action to fire, there are still the exact same kinds of commands, you can still take control of every character's individual actions if you want to, you still go around with three to four people to a party, you still get experience after killing the monsters, and the license board is no bigger a change than the jobs, espers, materia, junctioning, or sphere grid before it. If anything, the battle system feels more like the older Final Fantasies than the system they used in Final Fantasy X. The only major difference is that they take place in real-time on the same map as everything else, and frankly, people have been clamoring for the series to have non-random battles for ages.

I will never understand the big deal people make about it.

I'm going to play this game, probably buy it whenever I'm able. I've liked all of the FF games so far, while most people here can easily find something to ***** about in each of them(That's not to say I don't find flaws, I just don't embrace them in hatred, I guess).

I guess I overlook the negatives and embrace the positives far more than others(And I bet I'm the only one who liked Shadow Madness, too!).

be less skeptical of the battle system. The Gambit system seems brilliant.

Honestly, I'm surprised some Japanese gamers are so dumb. Causal gamers are casual gamers everywhere, I guess.
Oh my goodness, the Japanese aren't genetically gifted to be more sophisticated game players than us!

                              Re: Tim Rogers Defends FFXII

The Gambit system sounds a lot like using Macros over and over again in FFXI without the hassle. I imagine I'm going to love this game, and power-level the hell out of my characters.

This year I've played, and beat 4, 5, 6, 7, 9 and I'm working on 10 (I don't want to Draw magic 60000000 times in 8 to beat it.) If 8 had a script that let you Draw without pressing buttons over and over again, I'd be down.

Seems like a much simpler, dynamic system. I definately don't get the ripping off Star Wars, either. Really, FF4 was the one that ripped off Star Wars if you want to look at it like that. (As stated in his defense.)

Fanboyism from GameFAQs is what all this complaining is about, and we all know they're 12 year olds who have no idea what the original Final Fantasies were. Hell, even in 10 now, I'm sick of pressing L1 3 times every battle just so the characters I don't use at that time GET experience.

All the other FF games were flawed in those same respects. Hell, I gave everyone every single "Status Effect" resistment ability in FF9 when I fought Necron, and he still killed my entire party, put Garnet in Mini/Berserk/Silence and she kept attacking for 7 damage. I call that a little flawed.
