Homemade WoW guide writer fights back

Blizzard sued by WOW guide author

Crib notes version for those who don't want to read it. 24-year-old Brian Kopp wrote a WoW guide and sold in on eBay. Blizzard and its verying entities sent takedown notices to eBay saying it violated the DMCA (Digital Millenium Copyright Act). The guy was able to get the auctions back on a technicality but then Blizz flooded his account with enough comlaints to get it banned. He made a new account and they did it again. Now he's ticked off and he's not gonna take it anymore. He's suing.

I hope he wins. If he really is only using pics and info that is open to public domain then he's not doing anything wrong. Bliz is just being a typical idiot corporation that feels slighted every time someone else makes money in connection with them without getting a cut for their own pockets. Of course if he is using something that requires permission he doesn't have, he's going down and deservedly so. But this whole thing makes me wonder, how Unofficial are those so called Unofficial strategy guides made by pros? Are they really sanctioned by the game maker and the guide writers are just trying to seem "cool" and anti-establishment?

There's nothing illegal or immoral about selling information, provided you don't use someone elses intellectual property to make money. I don't know for sure if this guy is using someone elses intellectual property or not, but if he is, he needs to get what he deserves. However, if he's not, Blizzard needs to stop acting immature and let him do his thing.

I don't know if this is really illegal or not but, IGN and other sites do pretty much the same thing and haven't been sued for it yet. If the guy isn't using screenshots or text from the official WOW guide then, I don't see what the problem is.

If you write an article about a company or any of it's product it's ok because of freedom of speech. I don't know about this case.

I like Blizzard too much so I hope they win anyhow.
