    Download Troubles

I think I need some help here, because I darn well can't get this to work on my own...

I'm trying to download a game for RPGM3. I have a MAX Drive, and I already downloaded the software onto my computer. I went to a game and hit the 'Download' button, and specified the drive as the device to download to. Just to be sure that I recieved the file, I opened the drive on my computer, and there was a file with the game's title, and the Quicktime logo over it. When I used the PS2 MAX disk to access the drive, nothing showed up.

Just what am I doing wrong?

First check if the file is a (.max)

Then if it is, you need to make sure you "uncrush" the files. It won't read it unless you do that.

Use "Uncrush to", and don't do it to multiple files at once.

Also, you want to open the game files, first, as they are contained in a .zip file that must be opened before you can do anything.

Open them? You mean on the computer, before I remove the MAX Drive?
And by save as .max, do you mean that I have to save them as (game title).max? The automatic file format is .zip, but it doesn't show up in the name when I save to the drive from my computer.

I understand crushing and un-crushing. That's how I'm backing up my RPGM3 files.

you have to unzip the files while they're on your computer. then put them on the max drive.

            ...

            How?

If I try to open the file from my pc, it says that Quicktime doesn't recognise the file format (or something to that effect). I tried downloading to the C drive, but that didn't solve anything. I also tried to 'open from location,' though I honestly didn't expect to make any progress that way, and I wasn't disappointed.

My lack of experience grows ever more evident...

              Re: Download Troubles

Save the zip file to your harddrive

Extract the files for the Zip folder to your USB drive

Uncrush the file on your PS2 and put it on your memory card.

Why is quicktime even trying to open the files?

                You on a mac?

If so, you'll have to download some software to let you unzip files. here you go: http://downloads-zdnet.com.com/3000-2254-5040047.html

if you're on a PC, it should be able to unzip the files on it's own.

                  Re: Download Troubles

I'm using Windows 98, if that makes a difference.

At this point, I've downloaded the same file to two different places. The first is the MAX Drive (labeled 'Removable Disk' by the computer). The second is my personal file on the C: drive. If I double-click on either one, it says that it cannot be opened because it is not a file the Quick Time understands. After trying to download it directly to the MAX Drive and load it onto the memory card with the MAX PS2 disk about five or six times now, it is evident that I am doing something very wrong, but I can't tell what. Here's the process that I've used thus far:

                  1) Plug in MAX Drive to pc
                  2) Open Internet Explorer
                  3) Click 'Download' at the Pavilion
                  4) Download to 'Removable Disk' (the MAX Drive) and C: drive
                  5) Open MAX Drive under My Computer; a file with the same name as the game was found with a Quick Time logo over it
                  6) Attempt to open file; error message "Couldn't open the file "Whispers in the Woods.zip" because it is not a file that Quick Time understands" appears
                  7) Moved file from My Computer to My Documents
                  8) Insert MAX Drive to PS2
                  9) Insert MAX PS2 disk
                  10) Access MAX Drive; the file was not found, crushed or otherwise

Something is surely missing there, but that's all that I have done so far.

                    Re: Download Troubles

yeah, you need software to unzip it. obtain software to unzip it. winzip, for example.

                      Blast.

I suppose that's available at the address you posted above? *sigh* I'll get to work. I'll get back to you in a couple of hours when my dial-up modem finishes reading the file...and then a couple hours after that when and if it downloads it successfully...

                        Re: Download Troubles

the one I linked to is for macs.

you'll want to search download.com for winzip.

                          Re: Download Troubles

Okay, I know that it's been more than the mere couple of hours promised, but I had a heck of a time finding a trustworthy program that I wouldn't have to send personal information to. I should have the problem wrapped up by tomorrow, though. Thanks for everybody's help!

BTW, the link posted above led to a site with a wide database regarding zip programs, and it wasn't too hard to find one for Windows 98, so it worked out for the better all the same. Thanks for that!
