My first 4 days with RPGM2

    I got Rpgm2 last friday
    I miss RPGM3
It's not that it's so hard(although it is) I miss the layout editor
The layout editor is awesome, I've come to this conclusion in my 4 days
Rpgm2's way of doing things just doesn't seem intuitive(at least for my brain)
This is what I've created so far
    nothing
Every time I make something it's crap and I just delete it.
My scripts only work 10% of the time
Everytime I want to quit though I just think of that video of that japanese guy's game. Maybe some day

I've got a whole new appreciation for people on this site that work with 2

    Rodak
    bigfoot
    nash
and everyone else I don't know

    Kudos

I know what you mean, KennyKen. When ever I started using RPGM2 I was ready to introduce it to Mr. Hammer. But after a while of using it I got the hang of it. Just be patient with it and you can do some awesome stuff. Don't give up on it just yet, I know you can get used to it. Good luck.

I apreciate how RPGM2 is layed out, because in RPGM2 you can reuse EVERYTHING. Every script, event, vfx, event placement, object placement, etc. Its setup so if you make a movement script for townspoeple, and instead of remaking each one for each townspoeple, you can add the same script to each event.

RPGM2 does actually have a flow, a good one too. One that I wouldnt wish to be any different.

          Hey KennyKen,
          For what it's worth...
I can relate. When I bought RPG Maker 2 I was really frustrated for a couple of weeks. I had trouble figuring out a lot of things. I just gave up and sold it! What a bad mistake. Had I kept it, I would have been able to play lots of people's cool games that are available. Don't make the same mistake I made. Keep at it, and if it gets frustrating, just put it aside for a while as you get reinspired.

            I understand bigfoot
thats one of the reasons why I got RPGM2
In 3, y0u can't reuse scripts and it was really frustrating since I was trying to do complex things.
You've mastered Rpgm2 bigfoot, How long did it take you?
I'm going to tinker around with RM2 while I finish up my Rm3 project, maybe I'll be able to create a game by then.
I just miss that layout editor.

            Thanks for the encouragement VOJ

I miss the map and dungeon editiors from 3, but 2's accomplish the same result with more room for perfection.

Re: My first 4 days with RPGM2

I took about 2 weeks to be doing basic stuff fluently.

Another 6 months to feel like I could do whatever I wanted with the system.

I strongly reccommend finding Prima's Strategy Guide!

Apart from that great tutorial for making an adventure in an afternoon (which covers many basics) it has tons of pictures of all the stuff and people!

Check the Tips and Tricks thread for a tutorial I wrote about Doors and Chests which is written for the very beginner! It will even help with all those editors and knowing the difference between Action Scripts and Content Scripts.

The key to learning RPGM2 is to set a simple goal, try a few things, fail miserably, then post here what you wanted to do, what you did, and what happened.

Then people will be properly informed and able to help.

The hardest part is asking the right question!

                Good Luck with it.

                Peace.

                MOO!

Rodak: I've got to tell you...your posts are finally getting to me. I've been telling myself, no, I'm not going to do it (give in, that is) I've been tempted to go out and re-buy RPG Maker 2. I know they have it used at a store near me for $20. That's it! I'm going to get it in a couple of weeks. I'll lay aside ten bucks this week and ten bucks next week. Now, all I need to get later is the Action Replay Max.

And KennyKen: definitely. Without Christ, forget it!

I learned the basics of RPGM2 within a few days.

Just keep at it, never give up, and people here will help you to the best of their ability.

Re: My first 4 days with RPGM2

Make sure it's the EVO edition. I understand the regular doesn't include a certain requirement needed to swap your games between your memory card and PC. (It's either the disk or the flash card.)

And yes, RPGM2 takes a LOT of patience. I'm sure everyone here got frustrated by it at first, myself included. Knowing its potential does help keep you going, though. I can't say how long it took me to figure everything out (I've owned it since release, have yet to make anything for it, and a lot of time since I got it was spent on shelf).

As for RPGM2's layout editors, it does take some getting used to, but one could still make some pretty nice-looking maps.

Re: My first 4 days with RPGM2

To be honest, I hated RPGM2 when I first got it. In fact, I even sold it back to the GameStop when I got it. About a couple years later, I purchase RPGM3, but hated the simplicity. I sold that. However, now I've re-purchased the RPGM2, and it's my new favorite engine. It was difficult at first, yet now I'm getting the hang of it.

It took me a long time to master RPGM2's system, then again, I've been told by teachers I am a slow learner. And I had no knowledge then of what it could do. I discovered its no limits limitation on my own. I bought the game on the day it came out. And goddamn I remember how confusing the game used to be. Aside from DBS scripting, direct and indirect effects, I am pretty much fluent with anything RPGM2 now, (except on how Jugem made Tetris on RPGM2, I have gazed eyes at these scripts. I wound up on the floor in the fetal position with my thumb in my mouth) And I am glad to see that interest in RPGM2 has sparked after the release RPGM3.

RPGM2 is kind of a love/hate relationship. First you hate it, then you love it once you get used to it, you hate it again when you can't get something to work, and love it once you get it to work.

I ordered the Prima strategy guide, I couldn't find it for less than $24.
I can't wait till it gets here.
I have a game idea, it's somewhat like River City Ransom. Is it possible to pull off a Double Dragon like battle system? If so, where would I have to start?

edit: I decided to elaborate a little
those games above are classic side scrolling Beat em ups(although done in psuedo 3d). Now, I want to make it so that the player cant really move up or down, what I mean is that when a player moves up or down he never stops facing forward or backward(left or right). Now, I know I would have to create my attacks using VFX, but would the enemies all have to be VFX or can I use the character models. they would fit the mold of my game perfectly if I could. I thank you in advance as your answers would really help me during my planning stage.
