360 overheating IS caused by microsoft's stupidity.

    http://xbox-scene.com/
They left the protective plastic cover on the heat sinks. so it is IMPOSSIBLE for the thing to cool itself until you remove it.

    Ouch.

I'm glad I learned this before I got a 360. I don't have the tools necessary to perform the mod at the moment.

      it got updated:

*UPDATE* Several people on our forums say that this 'Indium' foil has probably been placed there intentionally, is part of the thermal pad and should not be removed. Apparently similar foil is used some OEM PCs, P4 and some PC GPU chips. While it looks like most people agree that normal thermal paste/compound without such a layer usually works better, one of the advantage of such a layer is that a heatsink can easily be re-installed without re-applying thermal paste after you removed it. You can follow the discussion about it here.

Yeah, so instead of stupidity the things just overheat cus they're badly designed. Either way, **** that.

well ive played my 360 for extremely long amounts of time and have not had any problems with it. same with my brother. i think that most people that are having problems dont know to put it in a well ventalated area. they are probably just tossing the system into their enclosed entertainment center and leaving it there.

i would also like to point out that both the ps2 and psp had some pretty bad issues when it came out.

Yes, and Korean Dreamcast's caught on fire.

People are genuinely unintelligent. Game systems have the same problems with heat that computers do. You can get best results from a game system if you blow the dust out of it at least 2 times a year, keep it OFF OF THE CARPET and in a well ventilated area. This even holds true with Gamecubes.

As much as I loved it, it was time to change it.

I have a 360 and I've had no problems whatsoever even though I've played the thing for retardedly long hours.

Engineers are taught to design to prevent these faults. It is much more likely that some accountant saw it fit to save a few dollars per unit in production cost by having them modify their original design.

given that they manufactured the product, dosn't it go without saying that it's due to their own stupidity?

Re: 360 overheating IS caused by microsoft's stupidity.

The engineers designed it, not manufactured it. Microsoft manufactured it, and thus Microsoft are stupid in the event they modified the original design.

But that sort of thing happens all the time. Remember the GM Corvair? The engineers designed in a $4 antiroll bar, and the acountants had it removed, regardless of the approval(or lack of it) on part of the designers.

Happens all the time in industry.

In the case of the 360, it is a possibility that those who designed it were idiots, but it is highly unlikely. Heats sinks need access to air, otherwise they risk allowing the device to go into thermal runaway. Want a fried CPU? That's the ticket. Engineers are taught about this, like their second semester in college. Unlike the Corvair, of course, this hasn't killed anyone, but it is nevertheless one disfunction that makes the product somewhat faulty.

I don't think it will detract from the devices future sales or have any effect on its titles, but it certainly reaffirms the notion that Microsoft makes crap products, like Sony, but people buy them anyway regardless.
