    Iraq Civil War?

    http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/meast/...ain/index.html

I get the feeling we've triggered a civil war between the Shiites and the Sunnis. Hundreds have been killed recently in these attacks. It pales in comparison to the toll of the war, but still...how do you stop a situation like this from arising?

Of course we did. We went in with no plan but to destroy buildings.

The only way to end it, is to let it play out. Let one side win. Just like a certain civil war over here. Even if ours wasn't based as much on religion.

So in a twisted sort of way the American revolution had to do with religion, the religion of money.

I personally, find it sad that Iraq may get into a civil war. I pray that their won't be too many casualties if such a war takes place. Loss of lives is always a sad thing.

Over 2,200 Americans have died in Iraq.

I'm sure no one can begin to calculate how many Iraqis have died since.

Everyone focuses on the deaths, but there are countless people who have had severe injuries. Like missing limbs, sickness, ect. But everyone seems to focus solely on the deaths. It is a lot worse than that.

This is all terribly sad. How ironic that it is easier to bring forth chaos and destruction, than it is to bring peace. I wish that this would all stop, but I know it won't happen.

It's a ****ty situation, I won't argue that, but calling it a civil war is a bit premature. If something like that arises, the carnage will be on such a scale that what's come before it will seem quaint .

Vonwert makes a solid point though. Focusing on the deathcount is probably the most base and meaningless way to sum up a war. While I have empathy for those affected, the number of non-Iraqi casualties is minute when you compare it to most armed conflicts of the modern era.

I think an Iraqi peace that doesn't involve ethnic cleansing would have to come from a voice of moderation within Iraq, but considering the recently deposed dictator had a habit of executing and oppressing anyone with education and influence, I have a hard time believing anyone not holding religious sway and a decent stockpile of arms is going to motivate very many people.

                          Re: Iraq Civil War?

I think that would require pulling out first.

Their culture is completely separate from ours, so I don't think it can really be compared to the American Civil War. Anyhow, this is a problem that I don't think can be solved by us, though I'm sure we'll spend many lives and resources trying.
