Silent Hill 2: Chronicle of terror

Preface: I'm not a fan of horror. I'm scared easily and don't like to be scared. I've never seen a Halloween, Friday the Thirteenth, or Jason movie. It's just not my thing.

But I've love mind trips and mysteries. So I've always been attracted to the Silent Hill series, though I've never allowed myself to play any of the games. I once read a synopsis of the first game and it gave me nightmares.

I'm really looking forward to the movie though, and felt it was about time. I've just bought Silent Hill 2 for the Xbox. I will chronicle here my thoughts and feelings through the play through of the game.

Here are the true life stories of a nancyboy scarredy-cat playing one of the, if not the most, terrifying games ever created. Cheers!

Man, the writting in the instruction manual sucks. I liked the real subtile opening to the game. It just starts with James looking into a mirror and then you have control. No opening movie or anything. Great way to bring players into the game.

Ugh. I controlls like Resident Evil. Blah.

Nice graphics though. I really like the rain effect. I was just walking down the dirt path off the main road when I heard a noise and my heart skipped a beat.

I don't want to fight any monsters before I get the radio... That would be no fun.

Go into options and change Controls to "2d".

You can change the controls by going to the options screen. There should be 2D and 3D. 2D is the one you want, I think. I always confuse the two.

Anyway, GOOD LUCK. I think you'll enjoy it once you get past the apartments.

I'm not big on the horror genre myself. When I first rented Silent Hill I didn't know what I was getting myself into.

The manual says that you can't straif in 2D and that it's harder to shoot.

The controls aren't that bad. You are going to be worrying more about keeping your underwear dry then trying to shoot.

Trust me, you don't really need to worry about that right now. You can easily make it through the entire game without using the 3D controls.

Yeah, the only potential problem is that the controls don't stay the same when the camera angle shifts. Depends on what you hate more: a second or two of reorienting the direction you're running in when the angle changes or RE-style controls.

Yeah, I prefer 2D myself. But good luck, man. I also got a scaredy-cat friend. Unfortunately I think all he'll do is see the movie.

Well. I got to the town propa. I saw the shape wonder off into the fog. I thought it would be a leg-thing (I don't know the names of the monsters yet) but it looks like some sort of maniquin. I figured I might as well charge in head on and went after it into the fog, but then you have to run for like 3 blocks with nothing happening!

Talk about tense.

I got to a save point before I found the thing so I quit and am playing Psychonauts now. Need something light and fun to take the edge off.

I'm waiting for my pal to come over before I continue farther.


****. I might have to switch to no monster mode... I'm not cut out for this at all.

It's okay, Loki! I got so scared at the beginning of the first Silent Hill game that I refuse to play it alone anymore. Now I make Gus play the game, and I cower in the corner of the room.

When Gus and I started playing SH2, I almost jumped through the ceiling a few times. o_O

I love the intrigue and the story of Silent Hill, yes, but I'm just too gutless to play. I admire your courage! You can do it, Loki!
