    The Ultraman Sketchbook!

This is not my Art, so may belong in the free forum, I was unsure... But the Art Forum seemed right to me! Feel free to move it if I was wrong.

I may have modeled my online life after Rodak and The Space Giants (If you don't know by now... do a search for the phrase "Space Giants"), but I have a great love of Rubber Suit Monster Nonsense across the board!

    Ultraman is This Guy:

His show was on every day after school, while Space Giants was a Saturday Morning thing. Odd considering Ultraman only had 2 two-part stories, while The Space Giants was all four-part stories!

But nevertheless I still enjoy Ultraman almost as much.

My collection of memorabilia is heavily weighted towards Ultraman simply because Space Giants stopped, while the Ultra Series continue to this day!

At one point Ultraman Stuff was the second largest marketing property in the world (next to Disney).

The sheer rarity of Space Giants stuff, and the vastly fewer number of people who remember it, made collecting Ultra Stuff a natural.

In fact... it took me years of looking to find my first Space Giants Toy!

I still get a thrill if I find one I do not have!

But... in 1990 I was working a lot of Comic book Conventions and decided to get Guest Artists to draw Ultraman for me (I had reference for Ultraman, and none for The Space Giants!). Any artist could do it if they took their fee in trade. I paid the really good ones whose work I wanted, and who would not take their fee in trade.

    The thread I started here:

Frank Zappa Drawn By Comic Book Artists!

    Inspired this one.

A friend of mine has a scanner, and some of the art is on loose pages which fit on the scan surface (most of the work is either too big or in "The Ultraman Sketchbook").

Here are a few of the images:

    Gahan Wilson

Gahan Wilson... Anyone who has read old issues of Playboy Magazine knows the name.

I was at one of those big New York shows (as a guest, not selling) and was in the Artist Room looking at the HUGE crowds, obnoxiously swarming the IMAGE Comics tables pleading for signatures, sketches, handouts, and more.

I don't begrudge their success, in fact it is impressive! But I never liked anything from anyone involved (Except McFarlane's Hulk run... but I felt his style did not work for Spidey!).

While I was being offended by the obnoxia of the crowd, I noticed an old man sitting at a table off to the side staring into space.

Nobody was even looking as they walked by his table!

Such things always grab my attention at conventions.

Those Old Guys don't show up in that corner of "The Artist Alley" without credentials! He was right near Godd McFartstain!

I walked over and saw it was Gahan Wilson!!!

I said "WOW! You're Gahan Wilson"

He responded, "Yes. I am." Rather Succinctly.

So I said "You are a VERY Silly Man."

To which he repeated "Yes. I am." with a much happier tone.

I asked if he was doing drawings that day.

He said that nobody had asked him yet!!!

This is the second day of a 2 day show.

    This is Gahan Wilson.

    I REPEAT:

This is the second day of a 2 day show.

    This is Gahan Wilson.

I know I blurted my "WHAT??" a little too loud.

I told him that he was going to draw me an Ultraman, Right Now.

And if he could include one of his trademark monsters it would really be wonderful.

He said he did not know Ultraman, but when I handed him the Ultraman Action Figure I carry to shows for Art Reference (you must bring an artist some reference in a case like this!) his eyes lit up and he said "I remember Him!"

    Great Drawing and Great Story!

    Vincent Locke

Vincent Locke is the Creator of Deadworld and a really nice guy.

This is from the Albany, NY Fantacon in 1990.

    Mark Bode

    This image was rejected Valkysas.

    Not for no reason either!

I just have no sense of right and wron when it comes to Art!

    Peace.

    But... It's Gahan Wilson!

I just went through the whole book now.

Here is the Complete List of Artists who did Sketches Notations for their achievements (at the time) (that I remember) (this was more than a decade ago!):

George Pratt - Enemy Ace watercolor Graphic Novel

    Javier Saltares - Ghost Rider

    Mike Zeck - The Punisher

    Vince Locke - Deadworld

Gahan Wilson - Playboy (and other Magazine) Cartoons

    Bob Wiacek - Iron Man

Mark Bode (X2) - Son of Vaughn Bode! Vaughn was THE SINGLE GREATEST CARTOONIST WHO EVER LIVED!!!

Greg Theakston - Long time inker for Jack Kirby -

Sandra Chang - Naughty Women in Leather

    Reggie Byers - Shuriken

    Ben Edlund - THE TICK!

Mike Oeming - At the time he was just starting out and I invited him to my store the day I had 8 guest creators for a Halloween Party. It was him, Adam Hughes (Who STILL owes me a sketch!!), Bob Wiacek, Nat Gertler (a writer of Horror stuff), ... I forget the rest! I'll have to dig out one of my old advertisements for it and update this list. Mike went on to draw Thor!

    Chris Warner - Predator

Rich Rankin - Grendel, Eagle, and more.

    Chris Sprouse -

    Kieth Giffen - Everything

Joe Linsner - Cry For Dawn

Jim Valentino - Normalman and more

    Drerrick Andre Richardson -

Mart Nodell - CREATOR OF THE GOLDEN AGE GREEN LANTERN!!

    Paris Cullins -

Tom Mandrake - Why is the only thing I can recall the 1990's revival Classics Illustrated; The Rime of The Ancient Mariner? He's done so much more!

    Sean Chen -

    Rich Burchett -

Rafael Kayanan - Conan (and a great Dante's Inferno portfolio!)

    Jeff Hilbrecht -

    Scott Nealy -

Tim Vigil - Faust and other Gore

    Scott Hampton -

    Mark Nelson - Aliens

Neil Vokes pencils / Rich Rankin Inks - Eagle

Rich Rankin pencils / Neil Vokes Inks - Eagle

Marck Wheatly / Marc Hempel - Breathtaker

    Mike Bair - Catwoman

    Jim Callahan -

Those are in order of appearance.

    Also of interest:

George Perez has a signed Page Reserved (but will probably never use it) (he put me off three times because customers come before dealers at shows!) (I respect that)

And... A two page ink wash spread of RODAK! by Mark Texiera (Ghost Rider)

I also have Douglas Adams' (Creator - Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy!) Signature in there! Why Not?

    Quite the Collection!

    Peace.

I'm not alone in this view.

Vaughn has had a major influence on everyone from Berni Wrightson to Mike Kaluta to New York City Subway Graffitti Artists!

Plus, his stuff makes me laugh harder than anyone else's!

Da Bode is Da Cartoon Messiah!

Dead 30 years and they Still reprint his work!

I'll never be swayed from my zealous belief in this unprovable fact!

      Peace.

            Yes Ma'am.

That's all of this piece that fit on the crappy little scanner I found.

You all did know that Rodak is my Avatar, not my self, right? Watch More Space Giants!!

There is much moreto the image.

He's sort of spreading his arms out in front of him.

I'll try to get a friend's camera over here this weekend so I can share some of these larger pieces.

For now, that'll have to do.

Any other names on the list catch anyone's attention?

            MOO!

Javier Saltares - Ghost Rider - I've seen some of his stuff before. I think he might have done some illustrations for a few Marvel card sets. I could be wrong.

Mike Zeck - The Punisher - I've seen his stuff, it's pretty decent.

Mark Bode - I know of him... I remember some of his stuff showing up in the comic shops in the late 80s?

Ben Edlund - THE TICK! - Who doesn't know about his stuff?

Chris Sprouse - I like his work, he uses that super simple but super slick pencil/ink style. I met him at a convention once, and got his signature on one of his X-men comic specials and some other book.

Kieth Giffen - I know him from Lobo and that crazy book he did for IMAGE, uh... Trencher.

Joe Linsner - Cry For Dawn - I don't read any of his books, but I admire the fact that he draws and paints women well. And he seems to be nice to his fans.

Jim Valentino - I'm not a huge fan, but I met him at a convention once in the early 90's, and I have some signed books.

Sean Chen - I really like this guy's art style, although I've only seen his pencils in a few marvel books. I should see what he's working on these days.

Tim Vigil - Faust and other Gore - Some of his art is okay, some of it I don't really like.

In any case, I'd like to see as many of the sketches as you care to post. Thanks for posting the Texiera piece, that's just beyond cool.

                Re: The Ultraman Sketchbook!

Mark Bode is too grown up for this board!

Ben Edlund's is the first image posted!

Kieth Giffen's was too big for the scanner!

I don't like the way these cut off so I am waiting for a camera before posting any more large ones!

Jim Valentino, Sean Chen, Tim Vigil... all too large for the scanner. They will have to wait.

Javier Saltares was writing Ghost Rider (with Mark Texiera doing the art) at the time I met him, and nobody knew he could draw!

                I was surprised he offered!

Mike Zeck has done so much over the decades that I am embarrassed that I can only recall Punisher. I dislike the Punisher intensley.

His name is even misleading... He doesn't make any Puns!!

Joe Linsner - Cry For Dawn -

I always encouraged artists to do an Ultra Version of their characters if they wanted to do so! Joe was totally confused by the request, and it shows a little in the piece. But I had a pic of this one on my old computer!

                So... Here is Ultra-Dawn!

The Mark Nelson piece (also among the big ones!) was an Ultra-Pookie! (I call Giger's Alien "Pookie" because he's so cute!) (Always have...).

That is probably my favorite of the lot, but needs to be photographed!

Why don't they make larger scanners affordably?

Just a couple more inches for most of these would be enough!

                Peace.

                MOO!
