Comic Book Movies vs. Video Game Movies

So I just watched Elektra. And ya know what? I liked it. It wasn't great but it was good. I was surprised considering how bad everyone in the world said it is. Same with the Daredevil movie which I liked even more. Still wasn't great but I definitely enjoyed it. So I'm thinking I'm just a pushover when it comes to comic book movies. Even though I don't read a lot of comic books I've always been a fan.

But I'm a much bigger fan of video games and yet I don't like those movies nearly as often. Like I enjoyed the first Resident Evil but only a little. The second one, which at least had some characters from the games, I didn't care for at all. First Tomb Raider movie, thoroughly enjoyed; second, didn't like. Same for the Mortal Kombat movies. Then there's the truly horrible game based movies like Super Mario Bros., Double Dragon, and I'm sure I'd include anything by Uwe Boll if I'd had the misfortune to see them. I'm hoping Silent Hill will be the first really good video game movie because it's about time we had one.

My vote goes to comic book movies.
    That is all.

I wasn't really impressed by Daredevil, and I couldn't get through Elektra. But I agree, that on a whole, comic book movies kick the **** out of video game movies. I honestly can't think of a REALLY GOOD video game movie, and I think the following comic book movies are quite good:

      - Superman (1978)
      - Spider-man
      - Spider-man 2
      - X-men
      - X-men 2
      - Batman
      - Batman Begins
      - Hulk

Yeah, I even liked Hulk, even though I know a lot of people didn't. I guess if I had to pick the BEST video game movie, I would probably pick Resident Evil. That's not saying much, though.

Best video game movie: Street Fighter.

Honestly. One of the greatest cinematic achievements of all time.

I don't really think there is a debate here...

Comic Books have it hands down...Sin City, The Crow...but then directors have a lot more to draw on when making the translation to film. Not just storywise, but in visual styles and pacing. I think the medium lends itself to film inherently. Many films get storyboarded before they're shot and what's that if not making it into a comic book?

I was really trying to debate which side has had better movies. More the fact that mediocre to bad comic book movie seem to be more tolerable than the equal quality video game movies. I guess due to the fact that comic books bring more story and characterization from the source whereas game movies either have to invent the plot themselves or not have any at all. EDIT: *just read shard's post* "What he said."

And wondering whether video game movies will eventually get to the level of decency of comic book movies once we actually get the first good one to get the ball rolling.

I watched DOOM the other day. It was alright, if you don't mind the fact that it wasn't really based on the game series it's named after. It was just a sci-fi horror movie with some DOOM elements thrown in so they could market it to the game fans.

I thing part of the reason why we get less pissed about poorly done comic book movies is because we don't generally know much about them to begin with. We get riled up about video game movies because it's what we know. When something in the plot doesn't synch up with what we know from the games (DOOM is an extreme example) we get mad. I have friends who never played any of the DOOM games and loved the movie. But I felt kind of dissappointed when it turned into a Stargate meets Resident Evil story. If it's because an invasion from Hell seems too heavy for most movie audiences, they should have never made the movie.

I honestly think that game movies will get better as games progress and grow.

Games are becoming more and more cinematic thus making it easier to wrap the concept of a film around it.

I kind of agree with Jester. Currently, the comic movies are the better, though. Later on, video game movies may start to be good (as long as a certain German director doesn't get involved.)

I mean take a look at the dragon ball series and comics AND movies.

all those came from the video game, and those are hugely succesful.

I wish I could direct a video game movie. I would make it good and I think everyone else here would too if they gave it a shot. I'm trying to say that they should leave video game movies to video game fans.

Dragonball started off as a manga.

                            What about From Hell?

When it started I said "Oh poop, they cut out the beginning" and when it was over I said "WHAT??? They cut out THE END??"

Thus the film version of that epic is pretty much just the middle of the story.

                            Go figure.

                            Peace.

I didn't even read the comic and From Hell the movie was a huge disappointment.
