    Optimus DS Explosion

Nintendo's recent DS conference yielded a significant amount of information regarding new products, but most importantly, it's getting a web browser, and NSMB is popping up before E3!

BREAKING: New details straight from a recently-held Nintendo DS Press Conference in Japan.

Nintendo of Japan has recently concluded its DS press conference with Japanese media this morning. While primarily concerned with introducting the forthcoming Nintendo DS revision, the DS Lite to the Japanese media, the company's press conference served to reveal several new, intriguing bits of information. The Nintendo DS Lite is currently set to arrive in Japan on March 2nd, in three different color variations, Crystal White, Ice Blue, and Enamel Navy.

Confirming our original report, the Opera Web browser add-on has been confirmed for DS. In addition to this, the browser will not be firmware. It is also now known that the forthcoming Nintendo DS web browser will fully utilize the properties of the portable device. Web pages on the DS will span both screens of the handheld, with the touch screen functioning for forms of input. The browser will also fully recognize stylus movements associated with the touch screen in order to adjust the viewing angle of the bottom screen.

The Opera software is currently slated to release in Japan during the month of June at the price of 3800 yen, roughly $30, and will include ATOK Kanji conversion software.

Conforming with our previous story, Nintendo has also showcased plans for a TV tuner device for the DS.The widely anticipated 1Seg Digital TV Card add-on will simply occupy the standard Nintendo DS game slot. Thanks to gaming-forum legend Jonnyram, we can now see the actual TV Card (below) inserted into several DS units.

However, knowing that 1seg is a mobile terrestrial digital audio/video broadcasting service in Japan, it may seem that the TV Card may be available for Japanese consumers only. Whether or not Nintendo Ltd. has decided to bring this add-on to the United States remains to be seen.

Nintendo has also offered new details regarding a number of current and future Nintendo DS projects. For starters, the New Super Mario Brothers title for the system is slated for a May Japan-release, at a price of 4800 yen, with Tetris DS releasing shortly at a budget price of 3800 yen in the region.

A plethora of DS game announcements have been made at the Press Conference, along with new information regarding previously announced titles. It is now known that Calligraphy Training DS is in the works for the system, and will offer DS users with the opportunity to perfect or enhance their calligraphy skills in a style similar to the immensely popular Brain Training series. Also revealed was the news of an unnamed piece of cooking software set for production on the Nintendo DS.

Previously identified Nintendo DS offerings such as Children of Mana and Xenosaga Episode 1-2 were shown at the company's press event. While currently unconfirmed to release in North America, many in the industry expect both of these RPG titles to eventually make their debut on American shores.

Other Nintendo DS releases discussed included brief information sessions regarding Super Robot Wars, Dynasty Warriors and Winning Eleven Nine. Both Dynasty Warriors and WE9 have been confirmed to utilize the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection to provide user's with easy, free, and fast online gaming experiences.

In regards to the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, Iwata has declared the service a strong success, citing the fact that over 900 thousand unique individuals have already accessed the online gaming network. Additionally, the Nintendo executive has revealed that seven Nintendo DS titles have exceeded the one million sales mark within Japan. Games such as Animal Crossing: Wild World, Mario Kart DS, and the Brain Training titles have been virtually dominating the Media Create sales charts associated with the Japanese region.

    Re: Optimus DS Explosion

Finally we get a release date for New Super Mario Bros.

The Opera web browser sounds cool and it's something I'd buy but, I'm not so sure about the TV tuner. I'm going to assume that you won't be able to get cable on it.

I wonder if this cooking software is that "Cooking Mama" game that's been shown in Japanese mags. That game looks kind of cool. I don't think I'd be interested in a cooking "non-game" though. I'm not interested in any of that Brain Training stuff either.

It's nice to know that Tetris DS will be released with a budget pricetag. More love for Nintendo's original handheld killer app courtesy of Captain Russia.

I'm quite interested in the whole Brain Training thing. I'm curious as to how it can improve my mind, and why it's so popular amongst the elderly Japanese.

Ya think the browser will support Java?

It would be interesting if it did support Java. Nintendo could make a website that would allow you to play NES games through the browser or something like that. I've seen it done before.

Edit: I remember Nintendo did just that on their site a few years ago. They had Exitebike on there and a couple of other games I think.

This is all great news. Whether you're personally interested in the browser and TV tuner or not it shows that the DS is certainly versatile. It's no PSP of course but it's still impressive. But if they can do a web browser and TV tuner as well as voice chat in Metroid Prime Hunters then we better get a wi-fi PictoChat eventually. And I'd appreciate getting an American version of the PlayYan.

Incidentally, there IS a special PSP-esque multimedia utility popping up for the DS courtesy of Datel, complete with a 4GB HDD. It's fairly expensive, though, with the UK price slated for 129 pounds. No US price yet.

Time for a Constitutional amendment: Marriage is defined as between one man and one woman OR one gamer and one console/handheld.

I may of got excited qbout the web browser if it wasn't for the fact i have a laptop, that I use me wireless interneet for... It still might be fun if i can download stuff onto my DS, like Flash files or somthing and bring it around with me.

But alas someone will come up with a way to make a virus infect my DS...

Yar, that browser ought to come with a firmware restore. Y'know, just incase...
Either way, it'll be neat to browse around with a stylus and two screens.

Mr. Interesting has invited himself into your pants, for a TV cap of the show has appeared, courtesy of "Fabien", showing off some of the PDA-esque tools aforementioned.

The browser looks sweet. The whole page appears on the bottom screen, and there's a magnifying rectangle you can move with the stylus. A magnified version of the area the rectangle covers appears on the top screen.

Speaking of stylus, the DS lite's stylus is BIG.

Linkage. It is entirely too expensive. 129 pounds = $225! I could dang near get a 30GB iPod for that kinda ching.
