    field ideas

RPG maker 3 has the problem of taking an idea for a world to explore and butcher it.
You picture a great field, full of grass, with a great river flowing through it, and a large water fall beyond a chasm, with a rainbow over it, once done creating it, it looks terrible, nothing like the grand vision you once had.
What Im looking for is ideas for a field, one nice to look at and cool to explore. Post a picture, or explain in great detail if you have an idea, fields add a great deal of eye candy to a game that could be lacking in so.

The problem i have with the fields in RPGM 3 is that they are so damn small. But to help achieve a sense of vastness in your world add a bunch of hills and mountains and put a bunch of forests everywhere. That way you cant see to the other side of the world like you can on a nearly flat field.

Fog may help with this too since you wont know where your going and cant tell how big the world is or where its going.

right, most ideas are not competely left behind, the only thing I want now, is for water to match the field elevation on parts so I can have a river, that leads into a waterfall. But thats not possible, unless I'm mistaken...
      any takers?

        Re: field ideas

I'll see if I can get some pics of a field I made, and I'm quite proud of it. Although the size limitations are quite frustrateing.

I also suggest useing heavy snow/rain (I'm sure snow works better) to make the area seem larger, by preventing you from seeing the whole thing at once.
When combined with the a high density of trees, it becomes quite easy to get lost!! Which i have done while trying to test a new feild.

Yes you can have a river, but you can not have a waterfall, because although you can change the water elevation, all of the water has to be on the same elevation, so you cant have water coming from a higher point to a lower point. this would be pretty cool to have in RPGM 4.

go play Forgotten Isle, I have a river running right through the Island. You can walk right up to it in the game. in fact you can do it right away when you leave your house(area) at the beginning of the game. (travel south)

the only problem with rivers is that there are no bridges, so you either have to build a land bridge ( which looks funny) or set up warp points on each side of where you would have a bridge. (functional, but unnatural)

I made a huge valley. It looks really cool in the winter with snow falling.

Explain how you made your river, you could lower the entire feild from it's preset to about 45, which looks river-ish, but you said change the water elevation, how do you do that, I think the field elevation is preset at 128.

                  Re: field ideas

I've tried to make fields that look good...I've spent an hour on one once, but they all end up looking like crap. I hope my story/mechanics are enough to draw people in to playing my game, because the pretty field maps sure aren't gonna.

                    Re: field ideas

Actually, I really like my field map (spent an hour/hour and a half.) Although, it is a harsh, barren place, not sure how I'll do on the pretty ones.

                      Re: field ideas

Xobie- sorry, i dont have my copy of RPGM 3 with me ATM, but I believe you can change the water elevation on the same screen where you set the music for the field. there are options like whether, time, climate, background, and water elevation. I believe there are 4 settings; High, Med, Low, and Off? (no water).

Load up Forgotten Isle and look at the field settings for the field named "Forgotten Isle", to see how I made a river.

SO, basically, people have made rivers in the past, however, nobody can quite exactally remember how they did it in the first place? Very interesting...

                          Re: field ideas

the smooth land option works great

It'll change a crappy field into one worthy of exploration.

why are people griping about field sizes? the fields are huge and you dont have to use just one, just make a path that continues the field onto another, thats what I do in my game.

to make a river just use the ocean pallet and set the land around it to 86, which will look like sand. any lower than that and you won't be able to walk
                          on it.

Magus, are you really needing a step by step instruction on how to make a river?

Am I the only one here that hates that 1" margin on the edges of the world map? I end up just making my maps into islands
