Calling All Auto Mechanics, Or People Who Know Auto Stuff In General (Resolved!)

Yup, another car problem. We all should have knew this was due for me soon.

Anyway I posted the below message at an auto form, and am trying to post it in many places to get some answers fast, because my job literally depends on me getting fast answers or things to try. So without further hesitation, my problem:
    ----------------------
What I have had done in the last two years: (Off the top of my head)
Fuel Pump (1 and a Half years ago).
Fuel Pressure Regulator (2 years ago)
    Complete Tuneup (Last Winter)
    Oxygen Sensor
    Map Sensor

My Lumina has two problems. I am posting both because the second problem may be related to the first, or vice versa.

Basically my car starts fine on the first click of the key, most of the time.

Some days, it won't start all day for the entire day. When this happens you will hear the starter crank, but nothing comes of it. I can almost swear (and am pretty certain) that I hear exhaust coming out in small stutters, but it never actually starts. The next day, it will start fine. My car usually picks one day out of the week not to start at all, and the next day, without touching anything under the hood, it will start fine. Recently, its been doing this three days out of the week, so whatever it is, it's getting worse.

The second problem is that the car idles rough, and it wants to stall, but 9 out of 10 times it doesn't stall. Once in a while it does, but not often. The car misses when it reaches speeds between 55mph and 70mph when accelerating, but doesn't miss when not accelerating.

Unfortunately, I am automobile-illiterate. However, this sounds like a problem I have personally encountered. Have you had your spark plugs replaced lately?

Last Winter the spark plugs and wires were done. So was the fuel filter, but I forgot to mention that.

I'd almost definatly say it's a fuel problem. Call a mechanic and give him $400.

Sorry, I know nothing about cars. The most I can do is post in this thread and make it look popular.

Sounds like the starter or the ignition system is out whack. Get it replaced

The second problem.....hmmmm. Let me think about this one.

The second problems is a sign that the first problem isn't his starter. The car is not getting enough gas to the engine.

I'll have to agree with you guys that fuel isn't getting to the engine. I bet that the second problem is part of the first problem. I did some research and it seems it may be the EGR Valve, but I don't know for sure. The EGR valve has something to do with fuel.

Is there a high school auto tech class/program around your area? If so, they may fix it for free, a little charge, or just ask for a donation.

The auto tech class at my school does so considering they always need something to do (ofcourse Im assuming its nothing TOO major or costly).

The EGR valve is part of the emission control system, and is only activated when the engine is at operating temperature. Generally, the engine will run fine cold with a defective EGR valve, but idle roughly and ping under acceleration once the engine reaches normal operating temperature. I'd suspect something else. It might be the fuel pump going bad. You'd have to have a mechanic check that out, unless you know how to depressurize the fuel system before disconnecting any fuel lines. And chances are, if it's a newer vehicle, the fuel pump is inside the gas tank.

The car is a 1993 Lumina.

The Fuel Pump is in fact located in the gas tank. I changed it a little while ago, so I kinda doubt (moreso hope) that its not the problem. The fuel pump does hum like its supposed to when I turn the key.

I checked the "check engine light" thingie, even though it doesn't come on, and I don't get any codes. It can't be electrical, I don't think, can it? (Since I get no codes).

Basically the starter cranks just fine, so I am assuming whatever the next step in the starting process is, is what's causing the problem. What comes next after the starter cranks?

Take it to a mechanic and say goodbye to $300.

I want to take it to a mechanic, but it won't start long enough to get it there. Besides, I only have $200 to my name.
