Pretend for just a minute that you could be hired to help make the next Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior, or what ever your favorite RPG series is. What job catagory would you be the strongest in? I am not asking what you would prefer, But which catagory do you feel you could contribute the most?

Re: If You were a Real RPG Maker, what would your job be?
I feel design would be my strongest area. Not any actual programming but just saying, "Hey, we should have a puzzle where you have to dress up like a girl."The Cyclops having only one eye, needed to seek shelter from the harsh sun. The shadow cast by the spheres gave him temporary respite.

Re: If You were a Real RPG Maker, what would your job be?
I come up with story ideas all the time.
If I'm in a rut, though, I'll either get help with the story, or just playtest the darn thing. Because I like picking apart at a game like that."What if like...there was an exact copy of you somewhere, except they're the opposite gender, like you guys could literally have a freaky friday moment and nothing would change. Imagine the best friendship that could be found there."

Re: If You were a Real RPG Maker, what would your job be?
There would be about 3 things on that list that I would actually would want to participate in. Since I have only one choice to choose, I'd have to say I'd want to do the writing. Even though my writing could use a bit of work, it's really the meat of RPGs. I'd personally would want to be just a designer of the game. This includes making the spells, monsters, and dungeon design, but writing the story is a bit better. It's really fun and challenging to write for a game. I like it. Not to mention that writing the game's story and dialogue is the hardest part of making an RPG on RPG Maker. I say the story can either make or break an RPG (most of times).

I'm not alone in this, but I know our numbers are few(only one other person said so in the poll), but the aspect of making items, spells, weapons, armor and the like feel more natural to me than the writing aspect, of which I can do, but only if I invest a lot of time into it.

My field would be general game design and directing, being involved in every aspect of the game's development from the music, to the programming, to the world itself. An adept game designer can benefit from passive knowledge in every area, though it isn't required.
However, there isn't such an option on the list, though it does encompass just about everything listed.Last edited by RPGD; 02-07-2006, 04:31 PM.

Re: If You were a Real RPG Maker, what would your job be?
I made this poll becuase I thought, "Gee, what would happen if all of us (pavilionites) were locked in a (large) room with some computers and told we couldn't leave untill we made a decent RPG". So far at 26 votes we have everything covered except someone to program the dam thing.
oh wait, maybe thats why we all use an "RPG Maker" program.
The reason I didn't put "Director" as an option was becuase almost everyone would want to be in charge. What I think is interesting to think about (and could tie in with group projects with future software) is the possibility of a person fucusing on 1 job in a group, and doing just that part as best they can. I wonder what kind of game a group like us could make.
Lets face it, maybe most of us enjoy all aspects of making a game, but arent the strongest in every catagory. what if you could be matched up with others that were strong in the areas that you were weaker in?
This may be down the road, but networking groups together for creation could be an eveloution of RPG Maker. It would have to be done just right.Esper Quest

Re: If You were a Real RPG Maker, what would your job be?
Well I could probably get the coding, though I would more than likely need some help since programming a whole game is pretty hard, though for Video Game Design class I did most of the coding for our 2D Point and Click Murder Mystery game. I also did a lot of the backend and graphical code for a lemmings clone me and 4 other people made for Software Practicum class. At some point I might finish some of the games I started coding or though about coding but never finished. The main reason I use RPG Maker is for the content, which is hard to come by legally and I would never be able to create. I've played around with 3D Modelling, but have only been good at coding the design for them.
Of course the programming language I know best is Java which is typically only used in webgames, but I'm trying to learn C++, since I already know C and OO programming it shouldn't take too long. I've also done some 3D stuff, nothing more than some Cg shaders, a random terrain generator, which looks alright, and a particle engine (without collision detection). So though I would probably enjoy working with 3D engines and graphical stuff I still don't have enough experience with shadows, and some of the more interesting 3D modelling techniques.
