Uh, imagine a political cartoon of, say, Jesus raping a child. Now imagine this cartoon in a newspaper published in a large city, say, the New York Times or the Houston Chronicle. If Christian groups get in an uproar over whether Spongebob Squarepants is gay, imagine what would happen in THIS situation.

If you just casually joke about religion, in my mind thats okay. if you do it direct to someone of that faiths face, like you suggested doing, thats DIRECTLY attacking their beliefs.
This incident that they are in an uproar over isnt "casual" humor either. its directly mocking, and insulting every single person of the muslim faith. Do you think they should laugh about being depicted as terrorists in a NEWSPAPER of all things? You will never see jesus depicted that way in a newspaper, despite his misdirected followers having killed FAR more innocent people in his name than misdirected muslims ever have. I'm not exactly making a negative generalized statement, I believe that those people were acting irrational. That's like if Valk burnt down someone's house because they said Transformers sucked. It would be an irrational reaction.
But, then again, there is that whole 'mob mentality', and if that country consisted of, say, one person, they wouldn't have reacted so severely.
It's just unfortunate that we have a mentally unbalanced born-again Christian who feels he's doing things because of divine decree in office, and people who are whispering these things in his ear all the time. The title of this topic has more wisdom in it than anything that has been said in this topic so far. I've met some cool muslim people but those muslims are morons. I can't make fun these people cause somebody wants to take up a cause.
