    SaGa Frontier

hello there, fellow video game fans.

i used to have this game back when it came out, but like many other games i used to have, it ended up being sold or traded in.

i saw this at eb games and bought it last night, so now it's back in my collection.

i played a little of it and i'm enjoying it for the most part, other than the fact you can die instantly from the beginning of a character's story if you're not careful. Lute, for example, starts off in his hometown of yorkland and just outside of it, there's a swamp place you can go for battling. too bad the enemies there will kill you in one hit! it's ridiculous. that's your starting point!

but anyway, it's still pretty fun. hopefully i'll play through more of it here soon.

anybody here like this game? also, while i'm at it, if anyone's played romancing saga for ps2, could you give me your thoughts on it? i'm thinking about buying that one too... and i'll probably end up getting it anyway, but i like opinions, so i'm asking.

That's candy corn syndrome. You sell the game because you're pretty sure it's bad/unbalanced/stupid, and then a while later you think, "Boy, I wish I had it back," but I guarantee that if you try it again, you'll get sick of it.

Just remember, man, you sold it for a reason.

There are a lot of things I liked about it, like being able to travel freely between all the regions at nearly any point in the game, the many different kinds of characters you could get... Actually, I can't really explain very well why I thought it was so bad. Certainly, my biggest gripe is that a lot of the combat was seemingly random. The teeam-up attacks, the way you learned skills, I don't know what else. And, man, the enemy sprites were just ugly as hell.

A lot of the concepts were really cool, though. You got a sort of girl who awakes in a gothic castle as a half-mystic, a guy who's a henshin hero, a lady who escapes from a women's prison to become a secret agent, a robot, and a magician who has to kill his twin brother...

God damn, I want to try it again.

i will mostly agree with you here. then there's the thought that i was slightly younger and less appreciative of smaller scale game design. that, and i read saga frontier came out after ff7, so looking back, i could see myself not getting into this game as much because i was too in love with ff7 at the time. but, who knows.

        *POSSIBLE SPOILERS*

I LOVED this game. All the different characters, the stories. The unbelievebly hard leaders especially if you get the secret final stage.

Lute, for example, starts off in his hometown of yorkland and just outside of it, there's a swamp place you can go for battling. too bad the enemies there will kill you in one hit! it's ridiculous. that's your starting point!
How about how after leaving his hometown the next story part is his final boss? LOL Short ass story.

Yeah I played it after ff7 and had probably just as much fun with it. It's one of my top 5 fav rpgs. One of my favorite parts was selling my life points as Blue for items and then letting Rouge kill me to become him with full LP, that was awesome.

I'm with Armored about loving this game, but I do admit it took me a while to complete it the first time because I would finish one character and put the game away for a while, dreading the thought of doing all the work over again for the next character. Still, I have more positive memories than negative ones.

I do wish that the stories were fleshed out a little bit more, but I loved the nonlinear concept. The supporting cast of characters are nicely varied--shall I go with the afro-sporting princess, the drunken samurai, the space controlling unicorn, or the mute guy with butterfly wings?--I remember hoping that there would be some "secret" scenarios for some of the other characters.

SaGa Frontier is one those games that I see myself holding onto for a long, long time.

            Re: SaGa Frontier

I have SaGa Frontier 1, SaGa Frontier 2, Unlimited SaGa, and Romancing SaGa (I even have the soundtracks for those games).

Generally for a saga game, its not the main characters plot themselves that make a game, its the world itself that you're exploring that makes it unique. The fact that you can pretty much do what you want, play as a specific type of hero, and take all kinds of subquests really makes it your own story. Games like FF7 will tell you whats going on and where to go, but with SaGa (except SF2, its pretty linear) its really up to you on what to do.

If you guys liked SF1, you should get Romancing SaGa for ps2 if you haven't already.

I really didn't like SaGa Frontier. I wanted my money back when I bought it, and I didn't like so many games in one package that don't have much to do with eachother.

However, SaGa Frontier II is one of my all time favorite games. I'd really reccomend checking that out.

Yeah, I bought my copy for $15 because I strangely enjoyed this game, even though I never beat any one of the scenarios once. I guess the five person party along with the variety of attacks just clicked with me. Oh well, I can't sell it even if I wanted to, it's nigh worthless now.

That's pretty much the point. Otherwise, it'd just be one main story.

Did all those characters in SaGa Frontier 1 meet up at the end for one final story? Because if they did, that would save it for me and make me want to give it another chance.

I liked it up until I had to fight IMPOSSIBLE enemies. God, it was such an unbalanced game. I enjoyed Red's story up until I had to fight some enemies on that ship he worked on, where there were 4 enemies surrounding you and NONE of them would DIE.

GAAARRRGH! *smashes memories of SaGa Frontier*

SaGa 2 was okay, up until I had THE VERY SAME PROBLEM with one of Will's stories.
(Did Will have any significance relating to Gustave's story at all?)

i never actually beat all 7 stories, but once you do, it basically takes you to the cygnus (the ship from Red's story) and acts like a devopers room or sorts (kinda like one of the endings from chrono trigger). There is no 8th story, and from some of the endings for the characters, they have no reason to come together. Their story is over.

I can see how something like that would be cool, but you already go through the game from seven different perspectives.

It's not shown at first, but as you continue playing, both of their families become involved with one another in a way.

In Saga 2 I got to the point where you were in a battle you couldn't win and you had to hold the enemy till your reinforcements arrived. The whole thing was based on luck and I must have tried the damn thing like a million times then gave up. You had to hope the enemy would miss on their attacks because all their attacks could kill your guys in like one hit. I liked 2 better than one though. The battles were cool, you could go one on one and do different combos and stuff.

Probably the Battle of Bucket Hill. I tried for a week, but I got lucky one morning at 6:30 before I went to school.

And that wasn't even the hardest part. Wil's last dungeon was so unbelievable, I just got a Dex Drive file online and beat the game that way. The ending isn't really worth it.

But, man, I got the Rhapsody on a Theme of SaGa FRONTIER 2 CD by Masashi Hamauzu, and it's just pleasant as hell. There's also a few booming orchestral songs on it, too.
