Talerico, you dumbass.
Hopefully the popular taste for symphonic treatment of themes from videogames has not abated. JMP Productions, following the success of their sold out More Friends concert, which featured music from Final Fantasy, has announced a new series, called PLAY!.
Music from game franchises like Final Fantasy, Silent Hill, Metal Gear Solid, World of Warcraft, Shenmue, and Sonic the Hedgehog will be performed by the Chicagoland Pops Orchestra, conducted by Arnie Roth. Special guests attending to greet the audience will include Jeremy Soule, composer for Elder Scrolls: Morrowind, Yuzo Koshiri (Shenmue), Marty O'Donnell (Halo), and Jason Hayes (World of Warcraft.)
Will there be enough enthusiasm for a larger concert (4,400 seats-- twice as many as More Friends) that isn't exclusively Final Fantasy? Last summer's Videogames Live concert tour was cut short in its last days, reportedly due to poor ticket sales and lack of promotion. Or at least, not incredible ticket sales. According to organizer Tommy Talerico, VGL involved a lot of expenses, including special FX and rock-n-roll lighting, which made merely average ticket sales a deathblow. Granted, Play! isn't a large tour, and the lack of lasers and explosions will keep the break even point a lot lower, but the commercial failure of VGL is enough to make us cross our fingers for this one.
Opening night is on May 27th at the Rosemont Theatre in Chicago, and tickets are already on sale. VIP tickets are going for $125, with nosebleed seats a mere $35.
