50% tax on games in texas?

    http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3147454

Imagine you're in Texas and really excited to pick up Grand Theft Auto. Doesn't matter which one. You've saved up your lunch money for months, but something is wrong - the price is much higher thanks to a new tax law. 50% higher, in fact! This is the future Star Locke, gubernatorial candidate in the state of Texas, envisions.

Locke, according to The Amarillo Globe News, wants "to do away with property taxes statewide" while taxing "violent games" and a myriad of other things (i.e. abortions and soft drinks) a whopping 50%. He sees these taxes as "the power to destroy. So our concept is that we need to tax things we don't want and you want to not tax things you want to encourage."

He stated that games would be deemed "violent" by a 10-member committee, and taxes would "be levied swiftly" against game publishers. While none of this is final, gamers of voting age in Texas who'd like to keep their games from being even more expensive have a chance to make their opinion heard during the state's elections in March.
    Vote wisely, texans!

HAHAHA! Another politician that is positive that the majority of gamers are below the age of 18!

I wonder if it will effect the price of big hats if this guy gets elected.

        Softdrinks too?!

I am sure if he adds that, then someone in his office would probably kill him on the spot.

I can't believe anyone would allow that to happen. But then again, in this day and age...

ifi t goes through, game stores in texas will go out of business, and online stores, along with stores of the states that surround texas will thrive.

Brings back memories of SNES games being about $75. But at least there was a reason for it being so high. CDs and DVDs made things cheaper. This won't pass at all.

Who is this guy? I've never heard of him. I doubt he's actually going to win.

If his platform is to tax the **** out of everything nobody will vote for him. I figure the list of things he'll tax are as follows:

Violent videogames (Super Mario World would most likely also fall under this category, along with all other non-card/puzzle games)
Violent Movies (There goes the theatres and the economy of Texas as a whole)
Caffinated drinks and tobacoo products (He might make Texas a fortune on this one)
Abortions (This'll line Texas' pockets real well, too. Nobody will change their mind on this based on price)
Jewish and Muslim paraphernalia (But strangely not Christian)
                  Televisions and radios
Internet connections (After all, it can be used to both spy on his dirty dealings with Mr. Jack Abramov and can also be used to look at porn)
Cell phones (The bane of all that is good and decent in this world)
Drugs (Over the counter and prescription, plus he'll tax illegal drugs through his network of mob, street gang, and Columbian Cartel connections)
Violent music (Can we see a pattern here?)
Guns ( yeah, right, a Republican taxing GUNS . I'm just kidding on this one ).
Adoption (If a girl's gonna get pregnant shed better KEEP THE BABY, GOT DAMMIT!!!!)

Anyway, I think that's enough for now. Maybe he'll be the Tidane's ***** at the end of Fatal Insanity 2.

Never heard of this person either. I plan on voting for Kinky Friedmen. It seems like Rick Perry has been govenor forever.

The Cyclops having only one eye, needed to seek shelter from the harsh sun. The shadow cast by the spheres gave him temporary respite.

He should put a 50% tax on R-rated movies too. By his logic it applies to that also, personally I've seen more violent movies than I played violent games, but hey nobody cares about that.

It's just kind of wierd that on one hand we have a game about stealing cars and outrunning cops, and on the other hand we have a movie about a chainsaw maniac chopping up corpses, but all they care about is censoring the games, which in comparison isn't as bad in my opinion.

Give it about 10 years, then the poeple who grew up playing games will be in office, then this funny crap will come to an end. Kind of like poeple against rock and roll 20 years ago.

And yes, you may call me Captain Obvious.
