    Dreamcast help needed.

My dreamcast's internal battery is pretty much dead. almost every time I turn it on, it tells me to enter the date and time. the longest it has went without prompting me for that was 5 minutes.

Anything I can do about this? is it possible to replace the battery? if so, what kind is it? I love my dreamcast, but I cant keep doing this every time I want to play a game (it wont load some game saves if the time doesnt match up)

According to this image looks like it needs to be soldered.

How long do you leave your dreamcast on? Does it get better the longer its on?

Well, I did some messing around earlier. turning it on, setting the clock, doing VMU management and then turning it off results in the battery being wiped.

turning it on, setting the clock, then playing grandia 2 for 20 minutes resulted in the battery still being okay when I turned it back on, but not when I turned it on 3 minutes later.

turning it on, setting the clock, and then letting it sit at the menu for 45 minutes and then turning it off (I thought maybe it charged, or something), then turning it back on resulted in the battery being okay, but again... not when I turned it on just a few minutes later.

Well, if you need an extra battery, the one in my old defunct dreamcast might work. I'm pretty sure the mechanism that spins the discs is the only part that's broken, so the battery might be alright.

Well, if it turns out it's replaceable, I'll mail you the battery or the whole thing. I was going to film us taking a sledgehammer to it.

According to that page, the DC charges whenever its on, so I'm gonna leave it on all day and see if that'll take care of it.

I'll mail you the battery or the whole thing.
I'd buy it off you if you were willing to do that, as I could cobble together a working DC between the two systems. I'd just need to know the battery still worked. can you check if it can hold the date and time still?

Kinda wierd that some games won't load. I don't keep my DC plugged in as much, so the battery is never kept charged, but I never bother to set the right time and my games are fine.

And yeah, even if its plugged in, the DC doesn't have a Standby like the xbox or ps2 so when the DC is off, its off.

                        maybe.

as for what games I need it to keep a proper date for:
SEAMAN. wanted to play it again. but it relies on the internal clock, you know? I think shenmue does too.

Even if the DC is charging, you have to remember that rechargable batterys only last so long before you cant recharge them anymore.

i haven't tried shenmue, but seeman I can see why it needs to have the clock set.

Yup, which is what I'm trying to find out now. before today, I havent touched my DC since october, so hopefully all it needs is a re-charge.
