I was really looking forward to the new wave of WA games--especially the re-make Alter Code F. But reviews haven't been very nice... what gives?

I don't know what it is about Alter Code F that bugs me. I'm not a fan of the graphics or the town layouts. They got rid of equipment and that really bugs me. There are monsters that let you cheat for both experience and money. The entire series has always seemed substandard as rpgs go. Bland, plain, nothing special, not really a bad game, but nothing great. But each of the first three games had their own charm. I think I'm the only one who liked 2nd Ignition. And the third one had an awesome battle system for me.
But everytime I play ACF I just can't help but feel like I'd rather be playing the origional. The Cyclops having only one eye, needed to seek shelter from the harsh sun. The shadow cast by the spheres gave him temporary respite.

The only thing that bothered me about 3 was that here you are in this wild west setting and they throw in a demon guy with fish fins on his face and people in robes talking about trees.
I mean come on, how am I supposed to take a guy with fish fins on his face seriously. He would have wiped my party out because I was too busy laughing at him.The Cyclops having only one eye, needed to seek shelter from the harsh sun. The shadow cast by the spheres gave him temporary respite.

I have to agree completely with IRC. My take is that Wild Arms games will only please Wild Arms fans. I would reccomend these games be rented before purchased, to make sure you like them.Last edited by JLaCroix; 01-19-2006, 12:04 AM.AIM: JeremyLaCroix

I actually like the series as a whole. I'm just tired of them recycling major themes over and over and I think that they make some questionable decisions. See above with the fish fins for an example of a questionable decision. The Cyclops having only one eye, needed to seek shelter from the harsh sun. The shadow cast by the spheres gave him temporary respite.

Frankly, I didn't really feel Wild Arms needed a remake. But I got it anyway.
I thought a remake would make the emotional parts stand out, but... so far, it really hasn't. Cecilia's big change wasn't much different (in fact, the exact moment was off screen), and while I liked that the prologue at the beginning kept the same music, it really didn't feel any different.
Spoiler for those who didn't play the original
I thought the funeral procession was a whole lot weaker, along with the whole Adlehyde sequence.
SPOILER END
The character models aren't very great. The towns and dungeons look very cool, though, but for some reason, every other town has been downsized. Surf Village is just a ranch, and Adlehyde is tiny compared to the original. And the battles have been really easy.
What I do like is that Rudy uses his ARM as his main weapon instead of a sword. I'm sure I like other stuff, too...
I support Wild Arms so that Media Vision knows that people like me think that the idea of a Western RPG is cool. I just wish they'd go straight Western, and put the super-fantasy stuff on the back burner. I think they're getting there. Wild Arms 3 was a great jump ahead, when they emphasized ARM development and even had HORSEBACK RIDING!!!
I read J. Parish's review for WA4, and it sounds reasonable, but I've disagreed with him before. I want to hear what one of you guys think. Mostly, I just want to know how much more WESTERN it is.

Re: So, do the new Wild Arms games, like, suck?
Well, the only thing in WA4 that is also in the other games would be the ARMs, and only the main character has one. Nothing else pretains to the previous games at all, except for the name Filgaia, perhaps. The setting has even changed.
EDIT: Well, that may be the turn-off for fans of the series, since everything is dramatically different. The setting isn't Western, but isn't fantasy, either. It's Sci-Fi.
But still, you owe it to yourself to give it a go. It's like a completely different game.
Okay, I'm raving here. Someone stop me.Last edited by RPGD; 01-19-2006, 12:15 AM.
