Hey all. I've been craving a good videogame a lot recently, and I usually give in to the craving to just go out and buy a game that everyone says is good. My problem is, I'm not finding anything that I can actually get into. I want some thing good and epic that I can get hooked on, like a good rpg or solid action/adventure game. I've been dissapointed with a bunch of new games that everyone else loves. I've tried Halo2, Resident Evil 4, metal gear solid 3, Baten Kaitos, San Andreas..... nothing is holding my attention. At this point, I'm spending most of my time playing old snes games and wasting time on warioware touched. Is there anything out there that will hold my attention? or am I just losing my interest in games?

If you didn't like RE4 there's no hope for you. Just quit videogames right now.

MGS3 and RE4 did nothing for you? yeah, um, I side with Armored24

You just listed a bunch of AAA titles, man. Maybe you should try Jenga or Parcheesi.

Not to say I didn't like those games, I actually do like RE4 quite a bit. It's just not feeling the same as back in the day when I would get so into a game that I could actually sit down and play or hours without getting bored. I didn't give MGS3 a fair chance either, as I only played for like 20 minutes and then my PS2 refused to read the disc anymore. Games like RE and MGS were never my favorite genre anyway. Not to say I didn't enjoy them, I played through and beat the first two MGS games, and I beat RE2 twice. But the games that I really love are RPG's. I'm sure there are others here that share the feeling that nothing beats a good, solid RPG. There just hasn't been one for so long! Baten Kaitos is pretty good actually, but an insane boss I'm on right now is preventing me from progressing. It's really too bad Xenosaga two didn't live up to it's potential. I haven't played it, but I'm not too excited, considering the mediocre reviews, and most importantly, the LACK OF YASUNORI MITSUDA. I haven't played a good rpg that I really, really liked since FFIX. I even lost interest in that towards the end of the 4th disc. What happened to the classics like FF7 and chrono cross? Come on, Square-Enix! Release something that doesn't suck! I suppose that there are some new rpg's out i should play. I've heard good things about shadow hearts, shin megami tensei: nocturne, and the lord of the rings rpg, but the Final Fantasy fanboy inside me is just screaming nooo! It wont be as good as Finl Fantasy once was! I just hope that FF XII is good. I just can't see myself liking the main character. When I first saw an ad for FFVII, I was like "Whoa! Look at that guy with that huge sword! He looks badass! I must play that game!" But just look at Vaan. I don't think I even need to elaborate here. Am I the only one here that thinks recent games are just lacking something? Perhaps someone can enlighten me as to a new rpg, or convince me to beat Baten Kaitos.

Hahaha, yeah, played the hell out of that, and enjoyed every minute of it. Just goes to show how far a little innovation mixed with a solid soundtrack can go. While that game was incredibly fun, It was kinda short, and I think I have finally tired of rolling up everything in sight. Good suggestion though.

Cause nothing beats Leonard Nimoy's dull droll.

Shadow Hearts is a lot of fun, but it's not a 'classic' like you're looking for. It's got a lot of contemporary speech that feels really out of place in a post World War I setting, and the characters don't seem at all right in the setting for that matter, either.

I see. It seems you're looking for what once gave you feelings of happiness playing games as a youth. It's nothing more than nostalgia. I like a lot of new games, but they can't hold a candle to the games I once enjoyed even after beating them a gazillion times. Although, I can't understand why I liked some of games I enjoyed back then.

It seems there's no hope for you if you keep thinking like that.

Play the NES version of Rampage. You'll play for hours upon hours upon redundant ****ing hours, and then, when you finally beat the entire game, all you get is a screen that says 'CONGRATULATIONS!' and then it takes you to the title screen so you can start over.

I think you may be right. Perhaps it is simply nostalgia Im craving. playing through games today doesn't give me the same feeling as playing games that I played when I was younger, no matter the quality of the game. This explains why I like playing old games that I have fond memories of, even if they aren't the best games around. I can always have fun playing games that I have fond memories of, because I was happy in my childhood playing games. Now that Im older and have been kinda depressed recently, the games Im playing now are mixed together with all of the other crap I have to deal with. I think I just need to get my life in order, and then I will be able to enjoy things like videogames once again...

Edit: And the NES godzilla game rules.

You're definitely right. RPGs today have been lacking quality. It's all homogenized anime stereotypes doing bull**** no one cares about. Like you, I hope FFXII changes all this. Square Enix needs to clean up its act. I hear Dragon Quest VIII is "coming really soon", at least, according to GamesAreFun.com. That oughtta be worth a look. I just hope it isn't, well, just anime stereotypes doing bull**** no one cares about...

:\

The best games I've played recently that you should try out are MGS3, RE4, Katamari, Ninja Gaiden and Riddick. All those titles gave me huge rushes of pure joy, they're sure to be classics. Give MGS3 and RE4 a try again. If you're looking for a good RPG today you're gonna be looking for a while. You should probably just go back to something in your collection like FFVI or Earthbound.

Or uh, Kirby or Godzilla. :extreme

I did that exact thing years ago. It was a true "are you ****ing kidding me" moment.

I know how you feel, i remember the old days when i was little and i got this weird "turning" feeling in your stomach and felt as if you were in the game. Games just dont hold my attention like that anymore. I guess its something you just grow out of. =/ Though, that feeling was the greatest when playing games, now i can only sit down for afew hours and play before i get jittery and have to go do something else. Its not that the game sucks, its just that im growing out of them.

My recent old school kick:

PS1:
Parasite Eve
Silent Hill
Einhander
Castlevania:SOTN

SNES:
Actraiser
Parodius

NES:
Faxanadu

Genesis:
Shadowrun

Master System:
Phantasy Star

PC:
Wolfenstein 3D

Might try some of those if you haven't already.

Man, Faxanadu was so cool but frikkin' long and hard!!! I never got very far in it.

I'd save up for that long sword and then, 2 minutes later, see ten other weapons that I'll never afford and go "screw this!"

It's just not feeling the same as back in the day when I would get so into a game that I could actually sit down and play or hours without getting bored. Actually, that recently happened with me when I first played Paper Mario 2. Though that might not be your cup of tea. Perhaps what you need is a game that throws a whole bunch of stuff at you, like Wario Ware. A game where just as you're getting used to the new ability/monsters/whatever, it gives you another new ability/monster/whatever to deal with. What happened to the classics like FF7 and chrono cross? Come on, Square-Enix! Release something that doesn't suck! Some people thing Chrono Cross sucks, but meh, just a matter of opinion.

If you need nastalgia, that shouldn't be a problem as long as you live near a place that sells old games. I mean, there's a pretty good chance you haven't played every NES/SNES/Sega game out there. Myself, the past 5 or so games were all pre-N64 games (save for Resident Evil 4, and maybe counting FFI&II). My latest trade-in was for Final Fantasy VI on SNES (Anthology load times BEGONE!), and the first Final Fantasy (yes, the NES version; not the nice-looking Origins version, not the insultingly easy GBA version). I'm very much enjoying both.

Yeah, I love playing old school games. I have real copies of the american FF1, 2, and 3. I also have FF: mystic quest, FF chronicles, FF:CC, and FF7 through 10. I had 10-2.. but I traded it in without beating it due to its blasphemy.
