    Oh that strange lag...

    Hi there guys,

I managed to create a town and with 30 decorative objects (doorless buildings) and +- 8 events. It was all well, until I added 10 NPC characters to it. Now, I seem to have some graphical lag - a severe slowdown - when I walk in certain parts (mostly the center) of the town. =\

I tried to spread the characters all over the map, but even so, the problem has diminshed just a bit, and now some other areas seem affected too.

Could anybody lend me a hand on this one? Thanks.

I experienced a similar problem when I had 30 decorative objects close together in a town. When I reduced the number of decorative objects, that helped a little bit. Could your reduce your number of doorless buildings? Or did you use them to create a type of maze or something?

I've noticed slowdown playing Dear Brave Heart and other games. Especially when running through a town wall's entrance. It's extremely annoying.

I think it has to do with how much stuff is in a straight line (or cone) from the player. Whether visible or not it is still tracked by the 'puter and can slow things down.

        I think.

        Oy.

This happens in RPGMaker 2 in crowded areas too.

Can't be helped. Just spread things out as much as you can and live with what happens.

        Peace.

        MOO!

I haven't notice any real lag. Maybe I am just used to the way the character moves.

Well, it's a thieves's city, so I tried to make it all unorganized, using the doorless buildings to create snakey-streets. As I told you, when I removed some of the decorative houses (specially the ones with smoke flowing off it), the slowdown got a little better. And it's just like Rodak said, it somehow seems to be linked to the amount of objects displayed in the screen cone-view.

However, what really gets me is that it was all right with 30 decoratives - no slowdowns at all. When I started to add NPCs, the whole thing messed up. =\

I'll try to spread the objects more...or maybe delete some characters, who knows? =|

I have that problem when you enter two of my towns. I attempted to make them seem less like villages and more like towns. To fix this in one town I just said it was undergoeing repairs from a war that only just ended a year ago. But that fits with the story. Anyway, I have SERIOUS lag in another town/castle. I had to put three groups of four buildings to make it look like a military installation. They were all barracks that are locked. That, coupled with the eight statues that line the street up to the clocktower in the middle, the clocktower itself, and several other buildings make it super laggy.

That cone-sight thing makes sense too, it also slows down if you run into a wall, or against a pool.

I hit this all the time, and had to do something about it because it reached a breaking point, my character would take a few steps, and then stop/freeze, and a few more steps, and so on. I don't know if you want to, but with the changes i made, the best one by far is weather and music, I turned off music, and made the weather day and sunny, and the lag was cut down by a lot, to playable standards.

I remember in RPGM2 if you had too many visual effects going off, or if the camera angle was close to the floor, you got hellacious lag.

I have a huge problem with Lag in my dungeons. Since most of my Dungeons go back on themselves, it makes the thing slow down and is a real drag. You really have to plan around that or make your gameplay experince teh suk.

Yes, I mean to spell it that way.

My dungeons are nearly lag free. Nevertheless, they're still relatively complicated to navigate, and very easy to get lost in.
