It's easier to tell when it's January 1st than it is when we're closer to the sun than usual.

I love te maturity of the site! (*possibly a hint of sarcasm)
But then again your name was Valkyass for a few hours one time elsewhere. I thought it was obviously immature though so i couldn't leave it.

Why celebrate at the point the earth is closest to the sun? Why not the point farthest away? Counting from any point in the earth's orbit to the return to that point would be a complete solar year. And if you started counting your months by the New Moon then all your dates would have to be changed. Interestingly Dec 31 was a new moon so January would start at the same time this particular year but it wouldn't be 31 days long.

But Sun / Earth Worship likes it when they are closest.
Sorta like being closer to God.
Metaphorically.
Sorta.
It's an ancient practice.
Closer is just better when it's something you Love. Be it a Woman (or Man) (or Hermaphrodite), The Sun, Your Pet, Anything...
That's how I think of it, anyway.
Peace.

All Right, NOW it's New Year's!!
Perihelion is happenning as I post this!
The Earth is as close as it gets to The Sun (for this orbit... they vary) and it is time to Rejoyce.
I still wanna know why it's so damn cold when we get closest to The Sun, though.
I know the whole tilted axis thing, it just doesn't wash with me... The Sun is so hot that a little tilt shouldn't matter that much!
But it does.
Go Figure.
Happy Perihelion Anyway!
