If you get Nero get version 6. Some odd legal issue caused them to make changes to version 7 so that you either have to get the premium one or pay for a plugin to burn dvds but it's included in the regular version 6.

I already told him to use version 6, several posts above.
Usually, newer DVD writers/re-writers (as they're normally called now) come with recording software like Nero, and sometimes even video editing software.
Anyway, yeah, the latest Nero's right on the money. However, you can use WinXP's proprietary DVD data recording system in the meantime.
