Valkyrie Profile PS2 Prequel and PSP Remake Next Year

Square Enix announced today that it is porting its 1999 PlayStation role-playing game, Valkyrie Profile, to the PSP. The game will be renamed Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth, and it is slated for release in Japan on March 2.

Square Enix is also developing a new Valkyrie Profile for release on the PlayStation 2 in 2006, titled Valkyrie Profile: Silmeria. The game will take place in the same world as the original Valkyrie Profile, albeit several hundred years earlier. The city of Dipan, which was a ruined realm in the original Valkyrie Profile, will be appearing as a prosperous kingdom.

In Valkyrie Profile: Silmeria, the player takes the role of two characters named Silmeria and Alisha, who coexist within the same body. Silmeria is a Valkyrie and the younger sister of Lenneth, the hero of the original Valkyrie Profile. Alisha is the kindhearted princess of Dipan. As punishment for angering the god Odin, he traps Silmeria's soul into the body of Alisha, and the game tells their story.

Square Enix will open a teaser site for the two Valkyrie Profile games on December 12 at the currently dead URL http://www.square-enix.co.jp/vp/.

I might have to get a PSP for this. We'll see.

Yet another good rpg for the PSP even if it is a port. I never finished the original Valkyrie Profile (and most people can't even find the game) and never bothered to dust off the old disc again so this should be rad.

But of course, this won't change the rarity of the original VP, right? Especially if I wind up getting it for Christmas by some miracle.

Sooo, I don't see any negative comments about them creating a prequel. Wasn't there a problem with the last couple times they created prequels?

EDIT: Nevermind, I see that S-E didn't have any involement in Xenosaga. (Xenosaga I&II are the prequels to Xenogears, right?)

Yea, Xenosaga is the prequel to Xenogears but from what I hear the series is being cancelled due to a lack of funds or interest... I could be wrong (and probably am) but that's what I've heard.

As far as rarity goes, people will still pay outrageous prices for the ps1 version. Just because Suikoden 2 came out on the PSP didn't mean people stopped paying $300 just for a JAPANESE copy of it.

...Valkyrie Profile is vague and confusing about its systems. Hopefully this will be addressed.

It wasn't exactly cancelled. They're letting it get finished but they abandoned the original plan to have seven or more parts and are wrapping it up with the third installment. Still they're porting Xenosaga 1 & 2 to DS.

The only way the new Valkyrie Profile games could affect the rarity of the original VP is if Squenix decided to rerelease the original but there's no reason to expect that.
