Passed By
The story of three early twenty-something guys who realize that they’re youth has passed them by. The story is about how these guys realize that they aren’t young any more. They no longer fit into that world. They realize that they are past due for graduation and getting on with they’re lives but they find that they are still in college and in a social rut. The female population their age has moved on to guys with jobs and careers and wanting to start families, while they have moved past the female population that they aim for. They are not cool any more; they aren’t into all the good things. All they do is smoke weed and drink beers and talk about times gone by. The rules of dating no longer apply as things have changed already with the incoming generation. One is resigned to his fate of being a bum on some girl. One is in denial thinking that he is still in his prime and on top of his game. And one is disgusted with the future he sees (he is two years younger. Bob 23, Larry 22, Nick 21)
Nick’s brother is married has already been promoted at his job (which he had already had by the time he was 21 and just moved into his first house)
Nick’s father lives in his own rut. Nick’s father is an alcoholic chain smoking mail man. He goes to work and comes home and drinks and smokes and watches TV.
Nick grows up and moves out of the apartment, he gets his **** together and leaves. Possibly he gets the girl. An older girl. He starts running and quits smoking.
At the end Nick has to look back at the two friends he left, Bob who continues stationed on the couch, having long since quit school and works part time at some local recreational venue, mini golf or amusement park. Maybe he actually does work at a golf course.
Bob hasn’t given up hope; he’s just given up his previous plans. He is content to live his life like it currently is. Party on the weekends, work during the weak, living in an apartment without steady girlfriend. Bob is actually a fun loving guy and a really party animal.
