    Character Changes...

Hey guys... I'm kinda new to RPGM3, but I catch on pretty quick once I know what I'm doing... well I was wondering if anyone here could help me on a couple things.

first, in the beginning of my game I'd like to switch between two main characters as the "party leader." Let's call them A and B...I tried to warp to B's house after the intro. Then I had B join the party and A leave the party. That didn't work because you can't do anything after a warp command. So then I did it backwards, I have A leave and B join, THEN warp to B's house... That looked really dumb because A turned into B first and then all of a sudden was in B's house. And even if I left it like that...everyone who walks into that invisible event then gets warped to B's house because it won't let me change the modes after the warp....Does anyone have any suggestions of what I could do?

second, is there any way to create an effect, such an explosion or something of that sort?

and finally, what are some things you do to get around the 100 character limitation...now I don't mean how do you cheat the system, because I've read that's impossible. What do you do within your game? do you make the "long RPG?" Do you make it so as most living creatures have been destroyed? (like mine)...

    1. I don't know what you could do about the character thing. Sorry I can't help with that.

    2. No you cannot create a special effect but you can make the screen shake and turn to a red color. That might be a good way to show an explosion.

    3. Someone in another thread said that he is using a bunch of doorless houses to make it "seem" like there are alot of people, just inside there houses and not coming out.

first, in the beginning of my game I'd like to switch between two main characters as the "party leader."
First, create a second mode on the event. In the Start Conditions slot (I can't remember the exact name) of the second mode, set it to an internal variable is 1. In the first mode, before you change the party, have the screen black out, that way the player won't see the change. Before warping, change the internal variable you chose before to 1. That way, when you come back, it'll be doing the second mode, which will have nothing in it, because the variable is 1.
second, is there any way to create an effect, such an explosion or something of that sort?
The closest you're going to get is flashing the screen red.
and finally, what are some things you do to get around the 100 character limitation
First I make sure I save 10 characters for my party members and important people (like villains). Then the remaining 90 are spread evenly between each town and castle. If I had 9 towns, there'd be 10 people in each town. If there were 5 towns and a castle, then there'd be 15 people in each town, with 15 more in the castle. And I might mix it up a little, to where a smaller town will have a few less people than a bigger town.

You can change that events mode in a different event.

Thanks! I'll definitely try the internal variable to fix that. I can't believe I didn't think of the blackout. Thanks!

Pandemonium, that just may help me out for the entire game! Which script command do you use to modify the modes of a different event?

            Re: Character Changes...

First, I am brand new to RPGM3 (and RPGM period), so if this won't work, please be kind in abusing me for my ignorance.

With regards to the 100 person limit, I liked the idea of reserving 10 for your party and important NPCs. With regards to the rest... I wonder if you could just create an auto event to warp people into x location.

For example, let's say I have 2 towns and want people walking around or standing around or whatever. (Like I said, I'm very new, just thinking about possibilities...) Let's call our 'generic' people extras. Now, let's put 2 or 3 or whatever 'important' people in the town who are distinct and further the story line, etc.

Now, as the player steps into Town 1 or 2, could there be an auto event sort of thing that would 'warp' or move generic1 through generic10 to the town?

Does this make sense even? I will probably experiment with it tomorrow, as I won't have time this evening. Good luck!

              Nah, you can't warp NPCs...

You can try to make them join and the leave the party, but it just won't happen, because after you warp you can't add for them to leave afterwards.

Yeah, I noticed that when I continued through page 2 and 3 of the forum.

I'm really starting to wonder if I will like this... it seemed so cool at first. Perhaps there is a reason I'm not a game developer....

                  Re: Character Changes...

I know that the limitations get very frustrating, but if you use the "multiple file trick" or "long rpg trick" explained here:

                  http://www.rpgmmag.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=817

you'll forget about those complications and it won't be an issue. Believe me, it's a lot of fun once you really start getting into the story.

Do you still want character A to be in the party, but have B be the leader? Because there is a change party leader command. Also, you could warp the character into B's house, have them move one step to activate an invisible event, play a storyteller then change characters.

Well, rather then clinging to big towns, I have small towns and try to have plot reasons. For example, the Temple of Liek is empty because the Samurai are always in the field, and Rio is home to an ex-fighter turned cannible. Just try to adapt.

Thanks for the link to the multiple file trick.

Now to see what I can create.... hmmmmm...

Actually I wanted B to meet up with A later - they have 2 different stories and I wanted the player to control each of them until they meet up, but I did figure it out. Thanks so much for your help though!

Not liking the limitations is hardly reason enough to reconsider creating games. Besides that, until you become skilled enough to tackle RPGM1 or RPGM2, RPGM3 is good for testing your creativity.
