This is the only game that doesn't work on my PS2...I am so upset, because I wasted money and it doesn't work.. :( Can anyone help? Is there an adapter I need to get? RPG Maker and RPG Maker 3 work fine... Anyone?

Well, the game is actually a CD rom while RPGM3 is a DVD rom, the cd roms are harder to read on most ps2's. I guess try changing the way your ps2 is standing then try it again.

Yeah, I noticed it had a purple backing.. No matter what I do, it's not reading it. I just dound a website that said CD Based games don't work on some of the PS2 models...I guess I'll just wait for PS3 (if its backwards compatible)

thanks for you help though!

Well it's not that it won't work at all, it's just that the whatever-it-is in your PS2 that tells the difference between CDs and DVDs is out of whack. You have to options: either sent it in to Sony to get it repaired (which means you'll lose out on a month of PS2-ing), or buy a new one.

I wound up doing both. Sent it in, and 8 months later, it crapped out on me again. So I went with a new one. Haven't had any trouble since.

Since I have had som much trouble with this too I looked into a way to read these disks more easily. In fact it hasn't failed yet, except with my replay max evo disk. First try it while the playstation 2 is "sideways," so that the disk tray comes out on it's side. If it says disk read error then simply open your disk tray and leave it open. Then hit the restart button. The disk tray will automatically go in and read the disk. I am not saying that this will definatley work for you, I am just trying to see if it will work with every playstation 2. My playstation 2 is one from when they first came out, just thought you might like to know. And besides that I have opened it up and messed with it many times. So it might just work for me.

First try it while the playstation 2 is "sideways,"Actually, that's more likely to make things worse, I've heard.

Well, then try it the other way then. My playstation 2 never plays anything at all that way. I guess I never did try my trick on it though.

And by the way, when I said except for the replay disk, I meant it reads it, but it says playstation 2 format disk thing instead. While doing this it has never said disk read error.

Urban Myth. The PS2 works better on it's side. Especially with RPGM2.

Many PCs have the CD Door sideways.

There is no risk and no harm in so doing.

It was the only way I could get my old PS2 to read the disc at all!

The mere fact that the newer model comes with a platform so it can stand on it's side supports this notion.

Good luck with it.

Peace.

Thanks guys - unfortunately nothing works. It keeps making a very strange clicking and spinning noise...doesn't sound healthy. There must be some kind of class action lawsuit here...because it seems that a lot of people have this problem. I'm going to try and see if there's a place in NYC that will do the free service repair instead of sending it back to Sony. If not, I'll either send it in and work on my old PS1 or SNES games ;)or just hold onto rpgm2 until the spring of 2006 for PS3...

Thanks again for all your help

There would've been, but because they'll fix it for free under warranty or not there won't be any law suits. They changed their company policy specifically for this problem since it's a result of a design flaw on their part. Their number's 1-800-345-SONY.

I think I know what click you are talking about. It is the same thing that ruined my older brothers Advent Children Disk. That was the only thing that it did that too for me though. Have you opened up your PS2 before. If not how long ago did you buy the PS2. Hopefully you can send it to them to get it repaired. That is why I don't care for the new systems very much. Based on how bad the Playstation 2 I assume that the newer ones arn't that good and are a waste of money. Also if the PS3 isn't backwards compatible atleast the price of the ps2 will go down.

The newer PS2s get rid of the design flaws. I got a new PS2 shortly before the slim models were announced (2004?), and I've had zero problems with it ever since. My older PS2 didn't last as long as this one is. So getting a new PS2 wouldn't be a bad idea, it'd just be at least $150 more expensive than sending it in to Sony for a month.

The clicking sound occurred when I was getting those disk errors. Definately needs fixed or replaced.

Be careful if you decide to repair your PS2 yourself. Opening the PS2 voids the warranty, and if Sony can tell that you opened it up, they will charge you. Any other time, it'll be free aside from the shipping you pay to get it to Sony.

I had the exact same problem with RPG Maker 2. I'm also just going to wait for PS3... I couldn't afford to buy another PS2 in addition to it. Playstation has a pending class action suit against it, but it won't be resolved till February...at that point, PS3 will already be coming soon. So I would just say, hold onto the game (it's a good one) and deal with RPGM1 and 3 in the meantime.

PS: (sony is very unhelpful over the phone...every person you deal with sounds like they're reading cue cards)

I did the same as Draygone and have the same thing to say. Just don't buy a used one.

Bad news, today I tried my trick again. It didn't work. I had to borrow my brothers PS2 to play Budokai 3 today.

Does your PS2 play other blue disks? The first RPGM2 I bought didn't work. I assumed it was because it was a blue disk cd-rom since I'd never tried one in my PS2 before. But then I tried it on a friend's PS2 who had blue games and it didn't work. Borrowed one of his blue games and that worked on my PS2 so it turned out that was just a defective RPGM2. I bought another one and it's worked perfectly every time.

Instead of starting a new thread, I thought I'd revive this one. I recently bought a new copy of RPG Maker 2 for $20. Awesome! The only problem...when I put it in my PS2, the game system started making all kinds of weird sounds, and it loaded up really slowly. It scared me because I thought my PS2 was going to explode.
I thought I'd share what I found about this problem with blue disks, Someone, I think it was Rodak, mentioned about the fact that over time the laser becomes weak, especially on the first generation of PS2s that were made.
I was told to search on GOOGLE for "dre fix" and found a couple interesting solutions to this problem- mainly involving opening up the PS2 to clean it. (Don't do this though if you still have your machine under warrantee. That will invalidate the warrantee - as Draygone has mentioned already) Anyway, just thought I'd share. My PS2 still isn't perfect after following the instructions, but it at least plays RPG Maker 2 better than before.

My new "slim" ps2 often get loud with this game in there.

*continues waiting patiently for RPGM2.5!*

especially on the first generation of PS2s that were made. It's hit and miss, actually. Some people have still-working first-generation PS2s (lucky dopes). Mine was second-generation, and it still had these issues a year or two after getting it. Not sure what generation I have now (got rid of my old one after the second time it reached DRE status, and got this new one a mere week before the slim PS2's US release announcement), but I haven't had any problems with it so far.

the only way I can get cd's to work in my Ps2 is to put tape on the disk. Its works great for me. There's a faq at gamefaqs that explains it.

Draygone
03-21-2006, 01:48 PM
I tried that. Didn't work for me.

KennyKen

well the tape trick stopped working for a while. Now I use the tape and stand the PS2 vertical. It's getting ridiculous.

Did you use two extra pieces of tape to form a square? Thats how I get it to work.

Draygone
03-21-2006, 10:00 PM
I tried various methods with the tape, and nothing worked for me. So I let it sit. Until I wound up getting a game that I wanted to play but brought up the DRE. So then I sent it to Sony. They fixed it for free, but it took a month before I was able to get it back (and during which time, I suddenly got the urge to work on an RPGM2 game).

Having had apparent success with the "cleaning" I did the other day, I stuck in my RPG Maker 2 today and I got "disk read error." That's horrible. At least before (and briefly after) the cleaning, it was reading the disk but making horrible noises, now it's not even reading it. This truly stinketh. Well, RPG Maker 3 and 1 work fine, so until it won't read those, I'll keep on using this PS2. I don't want to (and can't afford to) get a new one yet. At least when I get a chance to play RPG Maker 2 at some point, it will still be in new condition.

HolyPhoenix

Try it About twenty times ejecting the disk and puting it back in. Then yell at it and try somemore until it reads it.

P.S. This is known to take days to work.

Or wait for the Playstation 3 and see what problems lie wait for you there.

KennyKen

Sony better get their new hardware right, I've had to stand both their systems vertical to get them to play.

Pagerron: Did you try the tape?
Like I said before I use tape and stand my ps2 vertical and it reads the game with no problems.

Pagerron

I appreciate the suggestion KennyKen, but it didn't work. I put tape on the disk and turned the machine vertically, but I still get the disk read error message. Oh well. Still having fun with 3 and 1.

I have this problem too. I have tried everything except sending it to sony. You know, I've even tried turning it upside down.:cry
