This game has owned me all weekend. Anybody else pick it up?

As usual not much has changed, but I haven't played a Tekken since TTT, so it's really cool to get back into the series. Plus, arcade versions of 1,2 and 3 is an awesome deal.

If you're talking about Tekken 5, I'll personally wash you in a washing machine.:p A lot has changed. Even old favorites had updates to their move lists. I like the fact that it's as fast as Tekken 3, but a little faster. And the graphics make you think you were playing a low end Xbox game.

It's been owning me all weekend. I have all the characters unlocked and am getting them new outfits and whatnot. Accessorize, boys!

The opening movie is RIDICULOUS.

Ridiculously gay, or ridiculously bad?

The opening movie is RIDICULOUS.

Wait until you see some of the endings, especially Paul's.

Ridiculously cool, actually.

But it AIN'T gonna trick me.

I'll buy it if they fixed the problem where there is no gameplay left after you unlock all the characters, because to me that's what ALL of the previous games were built upon. Back in school, that's even all you would hear kids talking about "I unlocked ten characters, how many did you unlock?!" Tekken is the "Gotta catch 'em all" of the fighting genre.

Can anyone tell me if this is still the case in this one?

Magik

well, you can customize the character's outfits and give them certain accessories (none that actually affect the moves, as far as I know)... for instance, Nina can wear a sword on her back... to make her even more like The Bride.

Though, I guess the customization factor is just a "gotta catch 'em all" on top of the character unlocking "gotta catch 'em all" so I don't know if that's really what you're looking for, Jla.

SirTMagus

Itagaki would destroy Nina!

JLaCroix

Thanks Magik.

I like hidden characters and secrets, I just don't want it to be the whole point of the game. Street Fighter is a perfect example, tons of gameplay as the main focus and one or two hidden characters on the side, but no more focus than that. Didn't Tekken 2 have 12 secret characters?!!

Armored

Tekken isn't about unlocking characters. It's about mastering their every move and being able to use them flawlessly against an adaptive opponent. Most fighting games are, unless you're only playing single player, than it just gets boring.

JLaCroix
03-01-2005, 01:20 AM
Mostly single player, I admit.

However, the few dual player games I've played go by too quickly.

The arcade mode 1-player is too easy. I know the whole point of the game is two player, but not all of us have the luxury of that unless its online enabled. Is this one?

Armored
03-01-2005, 01:27 AM
I've only played at the arcade, and didn't even get into the customization, but personally I wouldn't get the game unless I had someone to play with.

JLaCroix

Although Mortal Kombat is nowhere near the best fighting game or anything, Deception does have a really cool online mode and there's always someone to challenge that can kick my ass, so that part of MK Deception is really good and I think Tekken should have this if it doesn't already.

Tsx87
03-01-2005, 02:13 AM
Tekken 5 doesn't have any online option.

It would be great to be able to play with anybody anytime, but only if it was 100% lag free, which probably isn't going to happen anytime soon.

JLaCroix
03-01-2005, 02:28 AM
Why not? MK Deception is absolutely flawless on a broadband connection. I've played like 50 matches, and it hasn't lagged once.

Tsx87
03-01-2005, 02:37 AM
I haven't tried MK online but if that's the case then I guess it could work. Still, Tekken is a a lot more frame dependant than MK so even a bit of lag would ruing everything IMO.

And are you going online with X Box or PS2? I was thnking of going online with Deception but heard doing it with a PS2 isn't as good.

Buh??? I gotta brush up on my techno jargon....

Armored

You know, those moves where if you blink you mess up a combo. Losing frames would make it near impossible to do some moves.

SirTMagus
03-01-2005, 02:50 AM
That's prolly why I never liked Tekken.

DOA's nice because you don't need to memorize 1,542 combos.

JLaCroix
03-01-2005, 02:53 AM
MK Deception has very good graphics.

Besides, you don't have to transfer frames through the internet. Think about it, all that's required is to send button presses and the PS2 does the rest. For example, if I press Down, toward + punch for a fireball, it isn't uploading the fireball animation, its just uploading the Down, toward + punch and nothing else which would take 10 kilobytes at best...

If they want to transfer animation through as well, they could, but that would be dumb...

Crimson Knight

Well there is Devil Within mode for single peeps, and Jinpachi makes getting story mode endings a pain sometimes.

Goufunaki

I can't stand playing 1on1 fighting for MK : Deception online (PS2). Everyone I play against, there is too much lag. Either the connections time out and the match is automatically cancelled, or I throw a punch and the opponent reacts a second later (or in my case, I am suddenly hit out of nowhere then I see my oppoment throw an attack about a second later). Not fun at all. :|
But I can play chess kombat just fine, though, since you don't need to have exact split-second timing to play that. :D

JLaCroix
03-01-2005, 10:21 PM
That must be your connection, I have never experienced even 1 second of lag at all ever with MKD. This problem hasn't even been mentioned on any website that I read. It's definitely flawless. I would check your connection at a Broadband report site somewhere.

I just played MKD online for the first time yesterday and I didn't notice any problems. Although, that might be just that I didn't last long enough in the fights for anything to go wrong. Resident Evil Outbreak on the other hand, lag-o-rama.

But the real reason I dug this up with the search function was to post this without starting a new thread.

I played Tekken 5 during winter break. It was definitely better than the last installments I played, smoother even, but not enough to make me a believer.

I still say 3 or Tag was the pinnalce of the series.

I played Tekken 3 recently. It's total butt.

Soul Calibur > Tekken, same company but different games.

Big Rick Cook

I watched a couple of drug addicts attempt to play SCIII.

It was kinda funny. The game looked neat, though, with the strategic battlefield element. I thought it was just another crazy fighter.

i love Tekken as always, but the Devil Within mode is just plain garbage.

Soul Caliber 3 got on my nerves. Nearly every round ended in a Ring Out.

Chuck

Well I was winning most of them. It's just the stupid guy would fall off the ring before I could finish kicking his butt. It annoyed me. I like the beat the guy to a pulp not get stopped when I'm half done.

John Mora

Winning is winning.

Chuck
06-08-2006, 11:05 PM
But for me the fun of a fighting game is wailing on some guy and or girl like a dyslexic helper monkey. I don't really care if I win if it only takes 8 seconds, I don't even get a chance to enjoy it.

John Mora
06-08-2006, 11:10 PM
Then why play competitively at all? Just play Practice Mode.

SirTMagus

You can mash buttons in Soul Calibur too. Or do the same cheap move in every fighting game ever.

John Mora
06-09-2006, 10:47 AM

DOA has the same thing. >:

Kefka Jr.
06-09-2006, 02:53 PM
And in spades.

Except that with each installment the mechanics seem to change ever so slightly so you have to relearn all the timings you got used to.

John Mora

DOA has the same thing. >:
Yeah, but it's missing the key ingredient: depth lol

Dreamknight
06-09-2006, 03:03 PM
But it also features one key ingredient: boobies.

Oh, and online play and modes that aren't tacked on.

John Mora
06-09-2006, 03:09 PM
That's right, it makes you pay for a whole other game of tacked-on boobies. :p

But seriously, I'm not a huge DOA fan. And SCIII has mobile boobies, too.

I thought getting my ass kicked by tall muscular dudes in diapers was totally awesome.

When I say "awesome" I mean "sucky".

Capcom vs. SNK 2 needed Sean and Andy Bogard.

And I wanna play Marvel vs. Capcom 2, too bad I'd have to go out of state to find it(or so it seems)... does MvC2 have three different strengths for punches/kicks, or only two?

Dreamknight
06-10-2006, 04:30 PM
Two.

Goufunaki
06-10-2006, 04:33 PM
2 punch, 2 kick. the remaining two buttons call out your other characters for their support actions.

Perform a super combo and press one of those buttons, you and that other character will both do super combos. Press both and all three of you go nuts.

Riotsword
06-10-2006, 04:38 PM
Two strengths is lame. I see why they dumbed it down for the tag fighting, I just prefer three.

SirTMagus
06-10-2006, 04:41 PM
I wouldn't call MvC2 dumbed down. It's still fun as hell.

Dreamknight

There's no place for it in the tournament scene, no, but it's my favorite.
