Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire: The Movie!

    Weak.

I guess this is what happens when you place Mike "Mona Lisa Smile" Newell at the helm and rush production. The acting is wooden. Breenden Gleeson is the best as Mad Eye, Daniel Radcliffe is back to gunting while clutching his scar, and all the charm that Michael Gambon had as Dumbledore in Prisioner of Azkaban is lost. The editing is sloppy and makes some scenes a confusion to what is going on. I suspect that Mick Audsley was doing his best to make the scenes work, but that is little justfication. The effects arn't improved over Prisioner, and they're used to little effect. They're all pomp and no substance. Also, if you hatted the omisions in Prisioner, you're going to loath this movie. The cuts from the plot were made only to trim the story down and do nothing to add to the movie. They only create confusion and introduce unnessassary characters (Rita Skitter for example).

I feel that both Chris Columbus and now Mike Newell are just regergatating the books on screen. These were best selling books so of course there must be a film adaptation. It's the American way. They're is no art to their adaptations. It's the book's content litteraly on screen, without any of the charm or nuance. I feel that Alfonso Cuarón had his own artistic interpratition of how the world looked and felt. He understood what makes the books good and on the same time he understood that makes a movie good. He was able to merge the two. He showed me that a good Harry Potter film could be made. Mike Newell showed me that not everyone can do it, and probilibly shouldn't try.

The film's as much British as it is American.

I haven't seen it, but I'm still hoping that I will like it. I didn't bother me that they cut stuff from Prisoner. They have to cut stuff from books. If you want the minute details, read the book. The only thing you have to do when you translate a book to movie is to keep its purpose and major details/characters intact. As long as you stay focused on that, you should be able to adequately translate a book to film.

I saw it and really enjoyed it. Even shed a tear or two at the end.

I do agree with Loki about Dumbledore. He seemed to be doing an out of control Dumbledore instead of the in control we see in the book.

But overall, I really enjoyed it, and must say, they are getting better and better with the special effects and Lord Vordmort looked great. I would love to know how they did his nose.

        Spoilers, yo.

I have to respectivley disagrees, gents. I thought it was the best of the series. what they took out was dissapointing (no House Elf Liberation? screw that!) but what they left in was gold... my heart sank when Harry landed on Cedric's corpse at the end .... and his father's reaction and... wow, it was great.

I am coming for all of you!

Overall it was worth watching, but not my favorite by any means. The movie felt physically long (as in, it took a large portion of my day), but very short in 'movie time'. It seemed like they condensed the whole year at Hogwarts into three or four days.

How could you not feel cheated by the World Cup? All that build up and then nothing. Terrible.

Okay, now I'm worried about seeing this movie. I've seen every Harry Potter movie so far, so I wouldn't want to miss out, yet I don't want to be disappointed.

It should be said, that I've never took the chance to read the books.

Why the heck doesn't anyone want to read the books?

Please read the books before watching the movies. The movies don't stand very well on their own. The movies are more like fan service then full blown movies.

I still don't get why some people will complain about Harry Potter, but when you ask if they read the books...they always say...Nope.

I always wish I hadn't read the books when I'm seeing the movies, because I know what's coming next and I can fill in the blanks of what was omited. I don't know if the movies work as a narative without the knowellge of the books in the audiance's mind. I know lots of the charm and style is lost, but how much does the audiace follow the plots?

I can never figure that out.

I've felt I had a good enough grasp of what's going on so far.

I don't read the books, because I don't read books, as shameful as that sounds. Most of my reading is done in RPGs.

I've read all the books except Half-Blood Prince which I have bought but haven't read yet. And I have all the movies on DVD and will be going to see Goblet. I love the books and it helped me that I'd seen the first movie before I started reading them. When I read books I have a tendancy to constantly change how I imagine the looks and voices of characters which distracts me from the story. When I get to see a movie version first then I have a solid idea of the characters and can focus on the story itself.

Same. I usually imagine faces nothing like the real character. I still usually read the books first, though.
A bit off topic, but anyone know about the Ender's Game movie? I never seen it anywhere, and was wondering how they would potray it, with the 6-7 year old characters and the constant nudity.
Anyway, I'll probably see Goblet in like, 2 weeks or something.

What is that like the sequel to Love Is?

I thought the flick was pretty damn solid. Definitely the best so far. Great pace, tight dialogue and editing, very concise, not a moment wasted. Who in their right mind wants to see CGI house-elves running around being awful little malcontents? That'd be laughable, irritating, downright ****ty at worst. Imagine all the extra greenscreen and digital "acting" to be done. Mini Jar Jars walking around making plum pudding. Ugh. And we'd have to hear Hermione whine about that. Omitting that crap was the best idea.

However, that Horntail? UNF. *greenlights the Vagrant Story movie*

And Daniel Radcliffe is finally comfortable in his role! It's nice these kids aren't forcing anymore, it's really cool to see their talent grow.

My main gripe is John Williams' score...... definitely not his strongest stuff. It'd probably be better to hear it isolated on the soundtrack CD but I wish it was more prominent, particularly during the climactic scenes. This disappointment stems MOSTLY from when I read the book over the summer. As I read the final few chapters I listened to "Anakin's Betrayal" from the Episode III soundtrack over and over and it fit so well. I hoped to hear something somewhat similar but....

So yeah, overall, I was pleased. Now I gotta read the last two books...
