I dont know, I was bored and jsut started modeling a water temple of sorts.

    uhhh....trees. 1 of them is a birch

.....was playing with some paint shaders I made tonight for fun.

    Hot damn, those are good.

I really like the water temple.

I don't understand how you make that "skin" graphic for the gun, and how it works... Is there a program that does all the measuring and whatnot?

I don't know, I don't know what to search for when looking for tutorials or information.

There are usually plug-ins available for most well known 3D editors that "unwraps" the mesh. It takes the polygons, and unfolds them to be one flat surface, which you can open in Photoshop or something similar. The hard part comes in making edges that connect in the model also line up when they get unwrapped. For example, a simple box would look like this unwrapped:

The more complex the model though, the more complex it is to 'skin' it. Imagine trying to make all the edges of something like this match up:

(This is an unwrap of a person... found it through Google image search)

          Re: Wip's dump

Well I had today off so I took sometime to show you how I "skin" something of my own. Its by no means the right or wrong way to do it, but its the most efficient way I texture my assets.

This is a bit of what smurf said. These models each have a planar, cylinder, shpere, and box unwrapper applied to them. As you can see, there is some serious stretching.

          1. I make a grid pattern in photoshop and load it into my program so I can tell if the UV's will line up.

          2. With the map applied you can see that it looks like poop. Nothing looks like it did when it was on the square in the previous picture, and thats what we want.

          3. After applying an unwrap modifier, you can see the UV's are stacked and going everywhich way, plus...they dont fit in the nice little blue square box.

          4. So here is where I start trying to break the object down into planes and figure out what I can planar hand map without stretching my grid map.

          5. After hitting the planar button it planar maps the region I had selected which was in red and makes it nice and flat.

          6. Ive done the same thing for the side, and you can see the UV's on the side look larger and dont line up very well with the UV's from the top. At this point its a matter of moving them around and getting them to line up before sewing them together and making the UV's one large package.

          7. Everything looks nice and aligned so as long as the grid is lining up, I will continue pushing UV's around.

          8. I go the UV's the way I wanted and welded them together so I now have on large UV set.

          9. Here is a pic, after the UV's are sown, everything still lines up and there is no stretching in the section I was playing with.

          10. If I was done, at this point I would use texporter to export my UV's into Photoshop. Once it does this, I open the file and start painting on top of my wires.

          11. Save out your painting, load it to your object and here is the aftermath.

That's pretty awesome. I always liked the M3.

I hate pulling UVs. I keep seeing the ads for Modo's UV unwrap and Maya is supposed to have something like it too but, either I can't get it to work right or it's not as simple as they want you to think it is. I don't even know how to get to it in Modo and that program confuses the hell out of me. I'll post some of the stuff I'm working on later tonight.

                Re: Wip's dump

Since Ive never skinned anything, and cant do it for the life of me, I just make each part that needs to be a seperate color a seperate peice. Then link them all together to make one model.

Then I add in all kinds of glossy stuff, reflections, blah, blah, blah.

I have no intention of animating any of the stuff I make, so it doesnt really matter.

You should add displacement and heighmaps to the flat ground. Otherwise, looks good.

I'm not big on texturing but, I do plan to do a little sculpting on the ground and probably put some grass here and there.

Small (?) update. I'm about sick of looking at this thing. I still got some more stuff I gotta do to it though.

One suggestion, make the boards on the bridge different lienghts and such...so it looks more natural. looks god though =)
