You're talking about a movie from 1982 based around a concept that wasn't even realized until nearly 15 years later (virtual reality that is) so of course it's going to be corny. It was still the pioneer in computer animation and special effects.

Also, Gargoyles is roughly equivilent to Tron.

Have you even seen Tron? The special effects aren't bad at all. It's the actual movie that's embarrassing.
